Of all the problems our industry experiences, if there’s one issue that’s seem remarkable improvement in recent years, it’s tooling. Some techs completely enjoy purchasing tools, while for others it’s the absolute bane of their existence. For decades brands like Snap-on, Mac, Matco, and craftsman dominated the entire tool market for techs. Harbor freight was around for decades before it was invested in the automotive tooling industry like it is today. Harbor freight and Amazon, in my opinion, completely changed the game for tools. Brands like Snap-on, Mac, Matco set the standard for quality and warranty. But then came along competition from other tool brands that began selling tools that were 3/4 the level of quality of Snap-on, Mac, Matco at 1/4-1/2 the price. This specifically has lessened a huge barrier that deters people from entering this industry. Competion is always good for us as consumers. But there is something you’ll get from local tool trucks that you CANT buy from online retailers, and that’s professional working relationship with a business owner. What do I mean by that? My experience with my Snap-on tool dealer is a great example. When the lock mechanism broke on my toolbox earlier this week I was in a touch spot as I couldn’t access a significant amount of my tools. After I called my snap on dealer and explained my situation he stopped over as quickly as he could, AND fixed it for free.
