Josh Arnold going over warranty engine reseal procedures.
What a great run through Josh! Flat rate and warrantee work is a tricky one. I wonder, what are your thoughts on ways to improve the system so that extra work wouldn't have to be on your dime? Anyone else have ideas? At WrenchWay we try to improve things for technicians, so I would love to dive into this issue more.
Technician
Unfortunately, it's a difficult ask either way. Technically it hasn't failed yet so the manufacturer is not required to fix anything that does not have a current issue, but the other side of the coin is why should a customer have to cover any cost under warranty. I believe the culture around how we fix cars needs to change, and the way Technicians are compensated needs an update when it comes to warranty times, and pay.

GM is pretty good about stuff like this. We can run what's called OLH - Other Labor Hours. It requires manager approval but covers the extra steps that may not be necessarily included. Of course you have to put this in your story and have additional flags. As a GM tech myself, I sometimes prefer a warranty job over a customer pay job as it can pay better in some instances.
Personally, I reseal whatever needs to be done at that time. It's my comeback if I don't and I do not have time to tear it back apart. First few times I do that job, book time is killing me so I use it to to learn a faster way. By the next few I'm below book and the time it takes to do the extra doesn't hurt me. Techs will stand there and piss and moan about having to do it instead of just banging wrenches and making it done.
