Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?
Yes, the shop is heated and air conditioned. We keep it very comfortable for our technicians no matter what season it is.
What is the size of the team I’d be working with?
We have approximately 16 team members at HM Repairs & Services.
What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?
The shop hours are 7:00am-5:00pm Monday through Friday with a one-hour lunch break. Overtime is available during the work week.
What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?
The shop provides uniforms, iPads, and personal protective equipment for all of the technicians.
What type of break room facility is provided?
We have a climate-controlled break room with a full-size refrigerator, multiple microwaves, Keurig coffee maker, television with cable, and internet. We also have plenty of comfortable seating and tables.
How many bays does your shop have?
Our shop has six bays.
How many repair orders do you average per month?
We average 85 repairs per month.
What is your parts ordering process?
We have a fully stocked inventory on premises as well as a special-order process. Our techs fill out a parts request form and submit it to our parts department. They are then sourced and purchased as quickly as possible.
What is your policy on side work?
This would be a conversation between the owner and technician but generally it is allowed as long as it does not cross over to our existing customers.
Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?
Yes, we do offer various skill training and CE opportunities as they arise.
Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?
Our technicians have the opportunity to move up levels. Below is the description of each level: Technician Level I • Basic mechanic activities- 60% o Oil changes o Lube o Filters o Brakes • Attend Trainings Technician Level 2 • Basic mechanic activities (40%) o Oil changes o Lube o Filters o Brakes • Advanced Mechanic Activities (35%) o Clutch/suspension replacement and fix drivelines. o Repair multiple systems (cooling, oil, DPF). o Perform minor engine repair. o Perform DOT inspections. • Attend Training Technician Level 3 • Advanced Mechanic Activities (60%) o Clutch/suspension replacement and fix drivelines. o Repair multiple systems (cooling, oil, DPF). o Perform minor engine repair. o Perform DOT inspections. • Diagnostics (25%) o Assist Lead Tech with system and vehicle diagnostics. o Support other Technicians as needed with diagnostics. • Attend Training Lead Technician • Diagnostics (35%) o Accountable for all vehicle and system diagnostics. o Provide support to other technicians as they perform diagnostics. • Expert Mechanical Activities (35%) o Perform Multimeter/Electrical repairs. o Perform engine overhauls. o Support other technicians with any issues that arise. • Mentoring (10%) o Recommendations for CE for Level Techs o Assist with Level 1 & 2 tech training. • Customer Relations (10%) o Provide technical explanations to customers as needed. o Provide backup to Shop – Manager when unavailable. • Staffing (5%) o Interview all new technicians. o Provide guidance on potential needs within technician staffing and skills.
Can you describe your performance review process?
Our performance review happens quarterly and annually. Once a quarter the efficiency is calculated, and the technician will sit down with their supervisor to discuss it. At that time, if support is needed to improve, they will make a plan at that time. If the technician is excelling in their efficiency, their supervisor will help set goals to help with future growth. Annually, the technician will have the opportunity to evaluate themselves and sit down with their supervisor to discuss their work and set goals for the coming year.
What type of safety training is required?
We have various safety training videos that we assign throughout the year in our payroll system called Paylocity. These are short but informative videos that speak to the safety of working in such a diesel repair shop.
Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?
We have a wide range of experience with our technicians. Our newer technicians are paired with an experienced technician at certain times to learn how to do a repair, observe a portion of the repair, or to be able to ask questions on a repair they are working solo on.
How does your shop get involved with the local community?
Our shop sponsors many local events throughout the year. We also participate in local golf outings and different events at the Lodi Agricultural Fair.
Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?
We partner with local high schools and hire youth apprentices to get their foot in the door of the heavy equipment industry. We also participate in our local tech college's career and job fairs.
Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?
Yes, we do phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews.
What do your in-person interviews entail?
Our in-person interviews entail a tour of the shop, a round of questions from the shop owner and shop manager, as well as our lead technician. At the end, you will have the opportunity to stop at HR's office to ask any questions about insurance or anything else.
Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?
We do require drug screening, and personality tests such as the DISC before hiring an applicant.
Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?
We do not perform a skill assessment before hiring. Skills are discussed during the interview process
After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?
Once an in-person interview is completed, you can expect to hear from us in 2-3 days.
Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?
The full hiring process can take as little as one week to complete. It really depends on the availability of the candidate to interview and to complete the necessary drug screening and personality test.

Pay Range: $86,732.00 - $105,448.00/year
Efficiency bonuses with a fair and attainable structure to boost technicians' compensation.
Shop Manager
Pay Range: $75,000.00 - $75,000.00/year
Bonus structure in addition to salary.
