Shop foreman I began in the automotive industry 19 years ago in 2005 when I was 15 as a tire and lube technician. I worked close with some good minds at the shop I was in to learn and pickup skills to aid me moving forward.
At the time I got in it was simply to gain skill and have a job to pay for my life at the time. I was raised to give everything my all so I leaned into my work and I enjoyed taking things apart and figuring out why they broke or how they operate. These days I enjoy the collaboration between technicians and the different backgrounds that people bring to the industry with a large difference of focus points you can learn from literally anyone. I enjoy speaking with my fellow techs to either solidify a diagnostic belief that I have or to maybe gain another perspective in case I’ve overlooked something. I have taken snippets of information that I’ve learned from multiple sources from multiple backgrounds to gain a skill that is sought after nationwide I can go anywhere in the world technically and find a way to make a living.
One of the things I wish people knew about what it’s like to be a technician is that working on different applications can provide a ton of information. However with working on various applications things are not universal across the board what fixes one may not be the same for another. A technician is much like a doctor continuously training to fix the next issue on something to only have something different and not encounter that same particular issue for a long time.
The best thing about work with the people at my shop now is we do have a lot of individual manufacturer techs with quality manufacturer specific knowledge. Some things are just not available through information channels provided to techs in the aftermarket. So having the knowledge from someone who worked solely on one manufacturer is good ace up the sleeve. Having those kinds of techs surrounding you that are also willing to work on something different is great all around. Having the opportunity to work with other techs that have a good attitude, work ethic and desire to move ahead differently than it has been done traditionally is refreshing.
