Technician Highlight! Tell us about yourself. What is your name, role, and number of years you’ve been in the industry? - Sean Pierce, Bend Or ASE master technician for Import Performance Auto Repair 18 years’ experience - I have spent the last 18 years in and around anything auto related. From 2005-13 I was a car audio installer/custom fabricator, from that point I ended up making the transition to a repair technician. With the electrical knowledge I gained in this field it has helped me take on some of the worst electrical gremlins out there. I thrive for diagnosis and must thank my time as installer for that. Since 2012 I have been a full-time repair technician and 8 of those years were strictly VW/AUDI based general repair and anything performance related which I believe has given me an edge over most technicians. I honestly spend much of my free time around cars whether working on my 72’ f250 crew cab or my 51’ international L110, and after graduating with my automotive degree, I went right back to the program and was an assistant teacher for a year. 1) What attracted you to the industry / what do you like best about the industry? - Since my first memories, I have always had the drive to see how things work and if I could fix anything that is broken. My grandfather was the one who had taught me everything from household products, small engines to everything automotive. I remember being in the garage with him, either helping him or watching his process and just mimicking his every move. Since middle school I knew I wanted to work towards being a mechanic and any job I had was always car related. - I would say that not knowing how my day will turn out because every car and every issue is different and by having to constantly think makes me not able to get bored. Working with all manufacturers keeps my mind rolling throughout the day. 2) What do you wish the public knew about what it’s like to be a technician? - This job is no longer just changing broken parts; we constantly have to keep up with technology. There is so much training involved, information and certifications that keep coming out as new systems get added to new cars. We now have to understand complex computer systems and with ev/hybrid vehicles work around their high voltage systems as internal combustion cars get phased out. 3) What’s the best thing about working at your current shop? What would you tell someone considering working at your shop? - There are so many things that I could say but if I had to narrow them down to a few I would say the investment in the technicians is incredible, the feeling of being part of a team and not just a dollar sign. How the owner spends a great deal of time finding a technician not only for their qualifications but how well they will fit right in with the whole team. How the company is run from the owner to the service writers, technicians, service porters to the customers. You can tell that there has been a great investment into making the company what it is today and will be in the future. - I would tell them to have a positive attitude and always be willing to continue their education. Be willing to be part of a team, don’t be shy to help out and not afraid to ask questions as it will allow you to grow as a team member.
