Would you recommend a career as a technician to family or friends? Please explain why or why not in the comments below.
Technician
Due to the flat rape pay plan, one has no idea what their paycheck will be? More times than not, it will be less than the time you spent at work. Try telling that to other workers and watch them balk at such an archaic and predatory pay system. I had a used car sales manager tell me one time, the only people he enjoyed screwing more than family was co workers… He explained he only saw family occasionally while he got to see co workers every day… That’s the evil spirit that has kept the automotive repair industry a pariah. “Just being glad you have a job” don’t pay the bills and doesn’t cut it with the young folk…
Technician
"But Russell, you talk so much about positive attitude. Why would you not recommend this career to family or friends?" There's a difference between having a positive attitude and wanting to set your posterity up for a better life than you had. 25 years off and on working in this career and 16 automotive employers show me that the reality we want and the reality we have are diametrically opposed, and the power is with those who do not understand nor care about the neanderthals in the shop. "I don't like service, I wouldn't have service if the OEM didn't force me to, and all you are there for is to provide the warranty." More than one owner has said as much and the attitude is pervasive. Why would I want that for my kids? Sorry, Jay, we have a long, long way to go and I'm glad there are folks like you and WrenchWay that are trying, but it's going to take a serious change in attitude before I recommend this career to my kids. Oh, and if one wants to do this, I want to be able to train them the right way and set them up for success, even though I know how hard their life is going to be.
Technician
I think nowadays, yes. We may be in a "golden age" of being a repair tech. The shrinking talent pool is forcing compensation packages to greatly improve. Jobs are plentiful, especially from really good businesses. The requirements for personal financial investment for tools are dropping. We're actually starting to evolve to meet and hopefully exceed the upsides to working in other skilled trades.
Technician
As high tech as vehicles are, if you are skilled enough to do it, then go into engineering instead. Better pay, work conditions and it's a career you can do till retirement age unlike being an auto technician where your body wears out and then you end up moving into another career field, starting all over again with seniority.
