What advice would you give to someone considering a career as an automotive technician?
Technician
Those job advertisements might sound good (if they don't sound like every other one), but job hopping is just exchanging the name on the sign and the faces on the people. Same process, same politics, same male bovine scat. Chances are the place you are going is worse. Keep your head down, learn all you can, attend night classes to learn how to run your own business, and hang your own shingle. Most shops love flat rate. Flat rate has all the disadvantages of owning your own business with none of the advantages.
Technician
Stay up to date on training but also keep in mind you'll most likely need another career path to move into as you get older. Most young techs don't think about that but one day you'll wake up after 20, 30 yrs and realize what you're doing has become painful and difficult as your body has grown older and your hands, feet, and back ache. Technician
Understand how you are payed and what is expected of you. If you feel that this is your path then decide what brand of car you want to work on. Go to school for that brand and enter the trade knowing that you have a life time of learning ahead of you. Learn all you can from others and you will do well.
