Over the past decade there seems to be a trend I’ve noticed when it comes to recruiting new technicians into the auto and diesel industry. That specific trend is that it’s a requirement to be a software engineer and an electronic genius to do this job. Make no mistake. The modern automobile and diesel truck have advanced in strides with technology over the past 25 years. Gaining a strong understanding of electronics and computerization is definitely important. But it’s NOT the entirety of the job. There is still PLENTY of mechanical repairs that need to be done everyday, there are also still young people eager to work with their hands. We’d be wise to not push them away from this career field. There’s plenty of time to develop electrical repair and those diagnostic skills during the journey of becoming an experienced and qualified technician. As today’s technician’s are aging and young techs becoming more difficult to recruit into the industry. One of the best things your establishment may be able to do is pull heavy repairs away from your veteran technicians so they can mentor, supervise, and pass on their knowledge to others that want to grow. Don’t forget to take care of those established technicians as well. Our industry as a whole spends way more time discussing what needs to be done to attract new entry level technicians compared to retaining its current technicians. But that is a discussion for another day.
