The balance shaft chain was a dead giveaway on that engine. Sounds like a lifter failed and wiped the cam, usually happens on the V8s, but I have heard of a time or two on the 6. First time I had to do a VLOM on that and found out I had to pull the oil pan to get it off I was rather grumpy. Bad repressed memories there. Anyhow, it's always good to stretch one's abilities, so good for you for tackling something new.

Jay, there are several issues: cheap parts like Paul mentioned, weak plastic retainer trays that wear and allow the lifters to rotate in the bore (nearly instantaneous camshaft wipeout on a roller lifter cam), constantly cycling internal parts that wear out, and variations in oil pressure and consistency from lack of maintenance coupled with all of the above.
