Both sides of our Audi shops have multiple large ceiling fans that run throughout the day in order to keep the shop cool. On hot days, we will also close the bay doors in order to keep the excess heat out.

How many injuries have you experienced in the shop? Tell us about one of them in the comments section.

Are we talking about busted knuckles here, injuries we should have had looked at but didn't because we couldn't afford to miss work, or actual trips to the hospital/clinic? If we're talking about a trip to the first aid kit, about 2-3 times a week. If we're talking about injuries that should have been looked at but weren't, well my back is reminding me it's there every day and my knees both hurt but I can't afford to miss work. I've had two that required immediate medical attention, one where I got a sliver of metal in my eye, and one where I got six stitches on my sliced open finger caused by badly handling an exhaust manifold. Common ankle sprains, rotator cuff tear, herniated disk, coolant hose blew up causing burns down my arm and hand. It's not a career for many as you do work through many injuries as Russell stated above. Cuts, bruises come almost weekly, then the years later aches and pains, arthritis in my fingers and hearing loss that come also after decades doing it. Yes, the pay can be very well, but your body takes a beating. (edited)

I'm not sure what the duration is, total I've seen a lot more than 6 and I've seen several instances of technicians getting hurt so bad that they were unable to work on cars anymore. We work in a very dangerous workplace, poor equipment maintenance, poor safety standards, and poor awareness are common causes of injuries I've seen. I've unfortunately seen, at past workplaces, a technician who was purple from heart palpitations and didn't want to work and his doctor told him not to work but management pressured him to continue working, fortunately he lived but that also demonstrates a shop culture where you're expected to keep working despite injury. Very true. Being most shops are short handed with help, Ive had many days over the years where I'd of rather of stayed home for a few days/weeks to recover, but in turn wrapped up my sprained ankle to stabilize it and off to work you go, hobbling around all day long. I agree, if this industry wants to attract new techs, that part of shop culture needs to change also. There's just so many needs in this industry that need to be addressed. Many work this dangerous industry with little to no benefits, forcing many to work through injuries also. That all needs to change. (edited)
