How much do you think ASE certification standards align with the practical skills required in the field
Technician
Despite what employers may be looking for the most in potential technicians, ASE test does NOT measure mechanical repair capability and efficiency. ASE strictly measures subject competence and problem solving capabilities. Before anyone asks me to point to where ASE specifies that on their website. I’m going to ask you to instead look at the real world scenarios. You will never see an ASE task ask you what the “easy way” or “flat rate” way to complete a repair. Or the most productive way to complete a repair. (edited)
Technician
Specifically, the good test takers are not always the good diagnostic and r&r technicians. Some can do all, but many are not the best test takers. This is even more prevalent with brands that don't require ASE, due to ASE being more broad spectrum as opposed to what they see on the daily.
Technician
A1-A9 anyone with book smarts could pass. I've seen some excellent techs failed because they aren't great at taking tests and some poor quality techs walk in all racked and stacked but can't diagnose their way out of a wet paper bag. On the other hand you really gotta know your stuff to pass the L1. I respect that test a lot.

I hope WrenchWay picks this as one of their posts of the month. It has my vote.
