Does your shop offer any type of tool allowance or benefit? Tools are a big expense and can be a barrier for new technicians who are coming into the industry. According to a recent WrenchWay poll, 82% of technicians stated they would rather have shops provide a $150 monthly tool allowance rather than provide all their tools.

I, under stand where you're coming from on but I would rather have the option, after years put in as a technician, to have something more to show for to show it, than ASE Certification's. My tools represented my growth as a Tech. The more tools I needed to complete a job properly showed me how far I had come. It's another type of benchmark. I'm not saying that every Technician has to have a toolbox full of special tools, especially since you may buy a tool for 1 job and then it sits in a drawer and is never used again but I always used the 3 time rule. If another Tech came and aske to borrow the same tool 3 times......it was time for him or her to buy the tool for themselves because it's obviously a frequently used tool....I would have loved to see a tool allowance in any of the shops I worked at. Never did.
Definitely understand that perspective, Richard. One of my favorite things was getting on the tool truck. The tough part is that I feel like it’s becoming a barrier for entry level techs. Especially as it relates to the other skilled trades. I don’t think there’s a right answer to this but it is interesting to talk about.

I hope WrenchWay picks this as one of their posts of the month. It has my vote.
