Both sides of our Audi shops have multiple large ceiling fans that run throughout the day in order to keep the shop cool. On hot days, we will also close the bay doors in order to keep the excess heat out.

If you are unhappy with your work situation, what is the number one reason why you stay?
Technician
In today’s hyper inflationary America, $50,000/ year gross income will barely pay your way. That’s what I made last year from my primary employer. I had to work a second job on the weekends to add $15,000 gross just to “get by”. I never thought in 1985 that after 37 years a ASE L1 master would have to work weekends just to scratch by. This industry is on hard times now so don’t anyone think it’s gona get better anytime soon… jmtc (edited)

I'm in Pampa, TX, made $82,000 last year and on my way to doing better this year, they make sure I get to 80 hours a pay half and I've done better than 100 several. I'm middle of the road, can fix anything but not particularly fast. We have two open slots. No weekends unless you want to. (edited)
Mike - I appreciate the transparency in talking about this. I agree with you and I think it's such a big deal that we get these things out on the table. We're doing our best to make sure shops and techs are on the same page so we can address some of your concerns. Russell may have some good advice for you as well. He found himself in positions he didn't love and was finally able to find a shop that treated him well (other than the GM & TX thing).
Yes money is the largest reason, as well as the work life balance. Right now I work at a shop where I’ve had to give up challenging tasks that I loved doing for a 5 day work we and steady paycheck and benefits. I was burned out from working 55 plus hours a week and only getting a 1 week paid vacation a year. No sick days. No training opportunities.
I found over 38 years of working vehicle repair, the biggest issue is lack of organization, and quality communication between owners/managers. The issue is when owners/managers do not listen to their employees, so there a constant conflict which hurts shop moral and productivity. This causes turnover and quality of work that is not at the proper level. It starts with communication, attitude, and discipline. The owner/manager needs to be a leader, a listener, ask questions, then work with the team on solution.
