Today, along with our Service Manager of our Dodge store and our two General Managers, I had the absolute pleasure of donating a newer, loaded Ford Explorer to our local Hartford High School Auto Tech class. This explorer more closely represents the kind of cars our techs are working on in todays market. That includes diagnosing a lot of electrical components like proximity keys (push button starts), lane detection, heated and cooled seats, stereo and HVAC systems, as well as the normal mechanical diagnosis and repairs.

At Carr Auto Group, we believe in celebrating excellence, and today, we want to extend a heartfelt shout-out to our sister store, Subaru. But that's not all! We have some incredible news to share. We recently had the privilege of hosting Jon Wenger from Subaru of America at our dealership. Jon Wenger came to Carr Auto Group to recognize the exceptional dedication and commitment of our Express Advisor, Andrew Mallea.

In the fall at Guys we are involved in parades in the area as well as reaching out to local high school to get involved with students who may be interested in the tech field. We also are starting to get geared up and ready for the busy winter season.

Not only is there a shortage of technicians in our industry, but there is also a shortage of instructors. It is no easy task being a teacher, and it takes a special personality to excel at it.

Based on a WrenchWay poll, the majority of technicians would rather work a 4-day, 10-hour work week versus the traditional 5-day, 8-hour work week. In our latest WrenchWay Buzz, we discuss how shops that adapt to this new schedule could open up their capacity and increase their productivity. Share your thoughts on this topic in the comments below.

Whether it is a WFH or in person type role, I believe that 4-10's reign supreme over the traditional 5 8's. To put myself mentally back into the environment of having to drive to the shop and be there in person to wrench, most of my 5 8's ultimately did turn into 10 hour days, where I was simply waiting for the traffic to die down before heading home for the evening. Once you're in the zone and working, the additional two hours can come and go without even knowing it. Allowing the flexibility of the third day off allows more time to recharge which is an added bonus.

Lot of shops sell themselves as "No weekends", yet expect their techs to be in the shop 9-10 hours a day, 5 days a week. My wife hates the long hours. I'm just burned out on them. I want 4-10s, but on alternating weeks, so first week it's M-Th, and the following week it's T-F. Every other week has a 4-day weekend which allows me to go camping, travel, see family, spend time with my kids, work hobbies, and generally have a life outside of work. My dad's younger sister was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer this past weekend. Non-smoker, lives healthy, about 18 months younger than my dad. It's hit me really hard that I'm here in Texas chasing hours when everything that matters to me is 1000 miles away and I can't go see them. Getting faced with the mortality of one's closest family really makes one rethink life.

While 10 hours days are not overall difficult. I think it would be helpful if techs really evaluate prior to accepting that schedule wether they think they can really manage it. Imagine adding 2 hours to your schedule every work day just as you’re getting ready to clock out. Can you manage to hustle through another 2 hours? Because you need to. If you can’t 4 10’s may not be for you.
