It's not that they aren't welcomed, more like they are being warned. To be fair, the environment is changing. 30 years ago was ROUGH! With the general move towards "Softness" and "Feelings" most shops are like daycare compared to the old school shops. I don't say this as a bad thing. Only the very thick-skinned and salty techs survived the environment 30 years ago...
Technician
While all of these are important, compensation can make up for shortcomings in the other choices. Money can pay for benefits and nice vacations (Work life balance) As far as shop culture, I can create all the culture I need in my work space. If you want to be negative? DO NOT COME INTO MY WORK SPACE. Thankfully, my employer does a stellar job with all of the above. Fair pay, good benefits, work life balance, and everyone gets along.
