Jay Goninen, Co-Founder & President of WrenchWay, discusses the results of a recent Shop Talk poll, where 74% of respondents stated that they believe the public’s perception of technician careers has not improved.

I wonder if how we as techs perceive how others perceive us is colored by how often our interaction with our customer is negative? The vehicle they rely on is broken, and we're delivering the bad news that it's going to cost then 3-5 months salary to fix it. In that hour, we're the rip off artists, we're the crooks, etc. The problem is then compounded by the shortage and many shops employing under skilled labor that screws up on the job, making their opinion even worse. The only time I ever felt respected is when I worked for myself, working with other business owners. Talent recognizes talent, I suppose.

Thank you, Jay, for this post. Our industry has always been looked upon as a dirty job, and if you couldn't make it in school, it was an option to fall into. This is no longer the case. Vehicles are so complex you almost need an engineering degree to work on them. Education needs to have a better conversation about our industries growth and opportunities. We are a strong industry with many career pathways. These opportunities can bring in a solid career with salaries that can match those of college graduates, without college debt. I hope education will align its curriculum to the current status of our industry's needs. This will show everyone what it takes to be part of our awesome industry.
