Yesterday, on my way home I dropped off a special tool that I own to a technician friend who works for a different company. The shop he works for was tackling a repair they had not done before. Most importantly, a repair that requires a special tool to complete. Despite the technicians warning. The manager of this shop told this friend of mine to proceed with repair knowing very well that neither the shop or any of its technicians possessed the special tool to complete the repair. Once they needed the tool and tried to work around they learned the hard way they would not be able to complete the repair without it. As a result of this irresponsible decision, the shop got itself in bad situation. This situation could have been avoided by acknowledging the fact that there is not always a work around to special tooling. Service leaders, if you chose to make decisions like this you are part of the many problems this industry faces. It’s one thing if you know for a fact a you can work around special tooling (for example: wiper arms pullers exist, yet we all know 99% of the time we can remove a wiper arm with a little bit of arm persuasion). However, tackling the unknown ill prepared is asking for problems.
