What is your parts ordering process?
We stock many popular OEM parts in-house. If not in stock, special order as needed.
What is your policy on side work?
Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?
We provide toolboxes and workbenches to all technicians.
Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?
We have a corporate training for basics/intro level technician training, as well as getting comfortable with Xtime inspection tool and media usage for inspections. We also pay for technicians to go to manufacturer training and get certified in all the necessary skills all the way up to Master level. Continued education via online and classroom training. We also have tuition reimbursement plans for courses taken while employed.
Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?
There are advancement opportunities available both at our location as well as in our entire organization.
Can you describe your performance review process?
We have an initial 60 day review as well as annual reviews unless it is required to have more at other intervals.
What type of safety training is required?
There are corporate level interactive video trainings and any required manufacturer training courses.
Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?
Our tenured technicians do a great job of mentoring and teaching new technicians
How does your shop get involved with the local community?
Tom Wood is very involved in the community. We are the main sponsor for the automotive education at Ivy Tech Community College. We have an annual golf outing for the American Cancer Society. We have a toy drive for YMCA each year. We are also involved with Lincoln Tech, Wyotech, and J Everett Light Career Center.
Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?
Our corporate trainer recently recruited a few people from J Everett Light Career Center, which is a local high school level career center. We also invest in and recruit from Lincoln Tech and Ivy Tech locally, as well as Wyotech nationally.
Where do you see the shop in five years?
We see a fully staffed service drive and enough technicians to handle all incoming work and keep everyone busy!
Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?
We have an online application that takes about 15-20 minutes to fill out.
Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?
Yes, we screen applications and resumes to check employment history, experience, etc.
What do your in-person interviews entail?
Usually the first interview is one-on-one with the service manager. For some positions, we will have a second interview or bring the GM in for the interview.
Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?
Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?
After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?
Typically 3-5 business days
Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?
Approximately 1-2 weeks.
A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $34 - $40/hour
B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $30 - $34/hour
C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $24 - $30/hour
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $14 - $20/hour

- 401K option is available for employees that are eligible based on age restrictions on the first of the month after 90 days of employment. Employer match of 25% of the first 6% saved. Fully vested after 6 years.

- 3 days PTO after 90 days of employment. Renews annually.
- Vacation Offered
- 1 week vacation after 1 year of employment. 2 weeks at 2 years of employment. 3 weeks at 5 years of employment.

- We offer paid holidays starting immediately on hire date. All major national holidays.

- We offer short term disability on the first of the month after 60 days of employment.
- Life Insurance Offered
- Tom Wood pays for employee life insurance of $10,000 on the first of the month after 60 days of employment. Employees have the option to purchase an increased amount of their own, or purchase for spouse, as well as dependents.

Top Shop Challenge: Industry surveys show most shops don't do a great job with onboarding new employees. What can a new technician expect during their first week at your shop?
The Wood group believes in preparing new hires for their first days on the job. The process starts before their first day with contact from our HR team to start enrolling them in ADP and time keeping systems. On their first day Technicians and Advisors spend the morning at our Corporate Office learn about the company, recieving all of their neccisary log-in credentials, and even going through a training session with our DMS and Inspection software. This preparation allows New Hires to arrive at their store and immediately be able to get comfortable and start working without walking in blind to our systems and proccesses. Throughout the remainder of their first week Technicians or Advisors are paired up with a veteran team member so they continue to learn our systems and expectations. The Wood group is not somewhere in which new hires are thrown into the deep end and expected to swim immediately.
After impressive tire sales in the 2nd Quarter our Service and Parts Managers were able to attend the Indycar events in Nashville surrounding the Nashville Grand Prix. A great time was had by all and we are hopefuly to knock it out of the park again next year and attend the season finale in Nashville.
COSTCO Wholesale is making impressive progress on construction next to us, and we are looking forward to the anticipated opening later this year and the increase in volume and traffice it will bring to our store.
Congratulations to our Lead Technician Brandon who recieved the july award for Uncompromising Integrity! Brandon will be celebrating 16 years with Tom Wood in August!
