In this episode of WrenchWay Weekly, we discuss diversity in the shop. Watch the full episode, or review the episode highlights below.

The Value of Diversity in the Shop

A recent WrenchWay Insiders poll asked, “Approximately what percentage of the technicians in your shop are people of color?” Let’s review the responses:

  • More than 50%: 26%
  • 1-25%: 52%
  • None: 30%

We also asked our Insiders, “Even if you don’t currently have any minority techs working in your shop, do you feel like it’s an inclusive place to work for all ethnicities?

  • Yes: 91%
  • No: 9%

While our poll focused on race, diversity in the shop applies to welcoming staff members regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, age, religion, or sexual orientation.

Diversity in the Shop is Smart Business

Creating a workplace focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is not only the right thing to do, but is a smart approach to running your repair shop. Diversity in shops:

  • Attracts Top Talent: People are drawn to a workplace that provides fair and equitable treatment to all its employees and offers equal career opportunities.
  • Grows Your Business: Think about the diversity of your customer base and keep in mind that people are more comfortable interacting with others of a similar background. For example, a female customer may feel more agreeable about your shop if she sees a female technician or staff member.
  • Reduces Discrimination Exposure: Aside from the fact that workplace discrimination is morally and ethically wrong, bias at a shop exposes the business to expensive legal action and can be a turn-off to customers who prefer more inclusive companies.
