  1. Keep it short. Most videos don’t need to be more than 2-3 minutes. If your videos are coming out longer, see if it makes sense to split it into two videos.
  2. Authentic is better than scripted. According to a recent WrenchWay Insiders poll, 97% of technicians who responded prefer authentic, unproduced videos over corporate recruiting videos.
  3. Keep your ideal candidate in mind.

1. Why Technicians Love Your Shop

  • Record a couple of your technicians discussing their favorite things about working at your shop and what makes your shop better than others.
  • It’s important to capture what the culture is like in the shop. Work environment is becoming a make it or break it situation for technicians when looking for a shop that is the right fit, so you want to stand out and show that your current technicians love working there.
  • Technicians want to go into a shop where they get along with their coworkers. Have technicians talk about how the team gets along, if they socialize outside of the shop or grab lunch together, etc.

2. Shop Tour

  • Give a full tour of what the shop looks like and where technicians will be working. Be sure to include the equipment you use, the tools you have, and any other products that make the shop stand out.
  • Provide a quick video of the break room and where the technicians will be eating lunch. Not all shops may have a break room, so if you do, it is important to show it off.
  • If you have specific department areas and lots of people working in your shop, be sure to include a video of all the aspects that make your shop unique.

3. Typical Day as a Technician

  • It’s important to show what the day-to-day responsibilities look like for a technician in the shop. This will allow the technician to get a feel for what it would be like to work at the shop.
  • Be sure to explain what a technician can expect everyday walking into the shop. Include things like where they’ll work, how they get assigned work, work order processes, and the parts ordering process.

4. Career Development

  • Explain why career development is important for technicians and how it is a priority to your shop.
  • Create a video of the different types of training opportunities you provide for your technicians. This will show technicians that you care about their growth within the shop, and you value the work that they are doing.
  • Discuss all the advancement opportunities your shop provides and what the future opportunities or promotions could look like for a technician at your shop

5. Real Talk

We know that it’s not always an easy topic to discuss, but include a video on what pay and benefits your shop provides. This is going to be a big question running through all technicians’ minds when looking at your shop, so it’s better to talk about it right upfront.
Include a video on how payroll works, how often the technicians will be paid, and raises. You want to ensure that you are including information that technicians actually care about.

6. Fun Stuff

  • Technicians want to know they can go into the shop everyday and enjoy their job. Making a video discussing the music you like to listen to in the shop is a fun way to show this.
  • Don’t be afraid to get a little personal in your videos. Include videos of technicians talking about their favorite foods, hobbies outside of work, favorite sports teams, etc. Again, this is an excellent opportunity to show the work environment of your shop.
  • Include a video talking about some interesting facts about the shop. This could include information about the owner of the shop, the history behind the shop, or when the shop was opened.
  • Do you ever have team lunches, parties, or team outings? Talk about the fun things you do to give back to technicians in the shop. This is going to be a key aspect that will differentiate you from other shops in your area and really make you stand out.
