Thinking Differently About Recruiting
- Shops need to do something to keep techs in the industry, and attract new ones.
- Traditional recruiting is posting on a job board, but they all look the same. Shops need to approach recruiting with a new mindset to stand out.
- Majority of technicians are already employed, but open to new opportunities. Shops need to land in technicians’ laps and show them the opportunities out there.
- Recruiting takes time and can be hard work, but shops need to put the work in.
Tips For Recruiting
- Start with the basics. Be a shop technicians want to work at. A shop can have the best recruiting strategy, but if technicians hate working there, people aren’t going to apply.
- Be realistic. Take a deep dive to evaluate if your shop is really a great shop to work at.
- Realize what makes a shop great, and promote it everywhere.
- Don’t rely on one channel. Utilize a shop’s websites, social media, word-of-mouth, referrals, etc.
- Take advantage of video. Technicians want real authentic videos; no need to get too fancy.
- Never stop recruiting. Continue to build relationships with technicians and people in the industry.
“You have to be a good place to work, and accurately reflect who you are and why you’re a good place to work.”

Creating a Plan for Recruiting
- Shops need a system in place when it comes to recruiting.
- Shops can look into free or cheap tools to create a monthly recruiting plan. This helps to stay organized and hold the shop accountable.
- Try new recruiting strategies and analyze the results. If it doesn’t work, tweak it, optimize it, and try something new.
“That’s a lot of what marketing is, trying something and seeing if it works. If it doesn’t work, try something else and always try to improve.”
