West Des Moines, IA
We currently offer several programs including intro to auto which is a one semester class that gives students an opportunity to see which area most appeals to them. They have access to mechanical, body and welding programs as part of the intro class. Students that choose to come back for the next year are enrolled in auto 111 for the first semester and auto 112 for second semester. These classes are a deeper dive into automotive technology including the use of precision measuring equipment, theory and operation of automotive systems, understanding of automotive service information and the hierarchy of an automotive shop, proper use of tools, automotive terminology, repair estimating, inspection of automotive systems, thread repair, tire service, fluid services etc. Auto 112 includes instruction in Disc and Drum brakes, hydraulics theory and operation, basic electrical testing and soldering, an overview of steering and suspension systems, basic theory and operation of HVAC and a multitude of other automotive systems and components. The next year, students are able to return for AUTO 2, which is comprised of 400 to 600 level courses in mechanical systems, engines, electrical, steering, suspension, drivetrain and some basic electrical and drivability diagnostics. All these courses with the exception of Intro to Auto are dual credit, meaning students are enrolled in both High School and College concurrently and the classes come with college credit. Students also take an automotive based math class with college credit in applied math. We are currently working on expanding our curriculum to include more on transmissions and higher level electrical and drivability diagnostics. In the next month (February) we are inviting local shops and dealerships in to our program so they are able to see our learning space, speak with some of our students and instructors. We hope to enter into permanent partnerships with these industry leaders.
