Which area do you believe requires more emphasis in automotive technician training programs?
For me, so much of it is focusing on the basics. That can be really challenging with young people. When I was a young Tech, I was always pushing to do advanced diagnostics but in hindsight, didn’t have the basic understanding of electricity that I needed. I think a lot of other young Techs fall into that same scenario.
Technician
i think, at least with electrical, a major part of it is that a multi meter number doesnt mean as much as say a waveform on a scope. graphing multi meters, and meters such as the N2 neuron with a graphing/scope setting, do seem to help with that. they get the flashy advanced test, and are still able to learn and grow with the tool. I think that seeing the waveform/graphing resonates better with some than the mental "water theory" that many of us were taught with.
Technician
Jay, that was a very costly mistake on my part. I pushed very hard to become "master" certified, without spending the time learning the basics very, very well. To this day, it's my biggest handicap. That's where that young tech needs a good mentor who can slow his roll but keep him rolling.
