That’s kind of the premise of leveraging a relationship. You can take that leveraging too far and now the favors are too one sided, causing the relationship to fall apart. You have to reciprocate on an even basis so both sides get something in return. The old saying, “it’s not what ya know, it’s who ya know,” rings true in the case of leveraging relationships. In the industry of mechanics, technology moves quickly. One person can’t know it all. We like to think we can, but it’s impossible. Let me give this topic some perspective. A vehicle comes in for you to check it out. You've narrowed the issue down to a system you may not have seen nor been familiar with. You do your research with all available resources. Your bay mate just got back from school on that system. You ask them for help and they get you pointed in the right direction for a quality diagnostic. Don’t forget to reciprocate when your bay mate asks for the same. Here is a real scenario that I recently had happen to me. I was at a customer location making a repair on a vehicle. One of their in house mechanics asked me a question. It was about a system on a vehicle, that neither of us where familiar with. It was a high priority vehicle. Replacement parts were 1 year out. Through my various dealings with customers I knew another in house mechanic at a different facility that had more specialized knowledge on the system. I made a call and in 5 minutes we had a diagnostic procedure. Performed the diagnostic and verified that we may need those parts that were a year out. I called him back and explained the situation. He asked me to bring the component over and he would look it over with me. We took it apart and were able to get it functioning again and the unit back on the road. Now it’s my turn to return the favor when the time comes. As you build relationships and leverage them to your advantage you will find it will add value to you. Not only will you learn something as you proceed, but you will also strengthen the relationship. Throughout my career I have added many skills to my tool box from thinking outside the box, leveraging relationships and doing whatever it takes to push through. It boosts your efficiency, productivity, career goals, and over all value as a technician. So today, tomorrow, and next week - focus on your relationships. Help each other out. Don’t forget to reciprocate. Make connections and grow your relationships. The more quality relationships you have the more you will all know collectively.
