Transparency around pay, benefits, work environment, culture, and more is what we’re all about! Proud to have shops like Capital District Transportation Authority on our Top Shop platform that get it too.

How much time do technicians waste by walking around the shop? In this week’s episode of Beyond the Wrench, we explore the unique SocketTime software and how it helps shops maximize every technician’s day and every hour, while still allowing flexible scheduling for technicians. On the same aspect though, how much money a year do techs lose daily from from working flat rate when the labor time is low, a bolt breaks and tech eats that time or the shop is slow and flat rate techs stand around not getting paid because of a lack of work. Easy for a guy who's sitting on a chair all day to say speed up compared to a tech who's maybe worn out from pulling an engine, or carrying 100# rotors across the shop, or arms are sore from swinging a hammer on a stubborn part. Believe me, as I've gotten older, and daily body aches are a common thing, I slow myself down the more years I've done this.
Totally understand that comment from a Techs perspective. Ultimately, they are trying to drive productivity and hopefully make the entire shop more successful as a result. With that being said, your comment on your body are completely fair. The job is not easy on the body and I genuinely feel like we've all got to work together to figure out ways to take care of that side as well. Any advice you'd give to a younger tech in terms of how they take care of their body?

You always get a lunch? lol. all jokes aside, there are times when a vehicle is promised for whatever reason, to be done in an unreasonable amount of time. Often times this is reciprocated back with, "I'll get you on the next one". which may or may not happen.

that was a pretty good podcast. it seems that their program could work very well, more so in an independent facility. i would just be happy with electronic dispatch over service writer dispatch. at least then nobody would forget to drop the ticket off at the right toolbox.
