Technician
I have been flat rate all my career, up until the last year. A couple places I had a guarantee, but for the most part, it's been straight flat rate. There are highs when most everything goes right and you string together a 50+ hour week. There are lows when nothing goes right and you're paid for 3 hours. And then there is the average slog with a strong mix of warranty beatdown that comes in at about 30 hours pay in a 40 hour work week. That is my flat rate experience. 2 things happened to fix all that. The first was that I got an hourly job with overtime. I'm still producing, still getting things done, but without having to freak out about how this 36 hour body harness that only pays 18 hours is going to kill my week. The other thing that happened is an executive at the OEM admitted how the OEM sees winning at flat rate. Times that can be beat are a mistake that must be corrected. Since that exec was kind enough to say the quiet part out loud, I can quit bashing my head against the wall at the dealer wondering what is wrong with me that no matter what I try I'm only 75-95% efficient. It's been a huge weight off my shoulders. And since my work will always be judged by the hours the OEM sets, I can exit the industry with a clean conscience knowing I gave my best, and I can quit trying to kill myself in an unwinnable game.
