Dealership technicians hesitate to work for independents, why? We offer the same if not better pay, less drama and great benefit packages.
Technician
It's too bad I can't choose several options, and you left out the most important reason: lack of support. I can call for help if the software doesn't work or the vehicle is a brain teaser. Where does one get that level of support in the aftermarket? Sure can't call the OEM TAC. As David Roman said on the podcast I listened to this morning, 98% of shops are crap. I've experienced that, although I'd place it at 90%. So, why am I not jumping into the aftermarket? Because I don't trust them any more than the dealer to keep their word. (edited)
Technician
My best friend worked with me at an independent shop for 10 years, decided to make a change and work at a dealer. He told me one thing he'd notice was a lot of them wouldn't touch anything unless it was a specific car brand they worked at. I believe that is a big reason as they are highly trained for a specific make or model, yet going to aftermarket and working on many different brands of vehicles isn't something they are sure would work out for them.
