Heated but not air conditioned.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

3 Mechanics and 8 total associates at the branch.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Branch is open 7-5 but mechanics work 8 hour shifts with 30 minutes for lunch. For example, 8-4:30.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Air tools, torque wrenches, safety tools and any special tools for trailer repairs.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Common lunch area with chairs and tables.

How many bays does your shop have?

2 bays and multiple mobile trucks .

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Varies widely based on types of repairs.

What is your parts ordering process?

Operations team orders parts for repairs, common parts stocked on-site.

What is your policy on side work?

XTRA employees are prohibited from any outside employment on business interests that would be considered a conflict of interest or places them in the position of lessening their efficiency, productivity, or dedication to XTRA Lease in performing their daily duties.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

1 of the 3 mechanics works on our lot from a fully equipped service truck

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

XTRA will provide training on repair standards and procedures for new upgrades to our fleet as they are deployed. We also offer tuition reimbursement opportunity (up to $7,000 per calendar year) on courses approved by management for employees seeking additional learning opportunity.

We offer annual incentive reviews for all employees at our branch locations.

What type of safety training is required?

We take safety very seriously, when hired will complete a battery of on-line safety courses and refreshes annually. In addition, we hold an in branch monthly safety awareness meeting and complete a quarterly self-audit with an annual safety audit from a third party. PPE provided and required to be utilized.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

This is a three-technician shop with lots of autonomy. We’re looking to hire an experienced technician who won’t need much training and won’t need to train others in the foreseeable future.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

No current program in place but would entertain ideas.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Not at this location, but we do hire and train entry-level technicians on occasion.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

May continue to hire additional mechanics depending on future market conditions.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

We offer a small team environment with lots of independence- you'll get to know your team well and upper management is always accessible when needed, but we want you to have the freedom to spend your day managing repairs with little interference.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes- we will ask you a few quick questions to learn more about your experience repairing semi-trailers and compare availability for a potential site visit.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

You will meet with the Operations Manager, tour the branch office, shop, and yard before completing our Mechanic Qualification Test.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes- after your offer letter has been signed, you’ll need to complete a DOT Physical, Drug Screen, and criminal background screening. Once completed and approved by Human Resources, we will finalize a start date and prep the shop for your first day of work. Ongoing ability to maintain a DOT Medical Certificate is a requirement for continued employment at XTRA.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

The Mechanic Qualification Test is a short written exam designed to show your expertise in semi-trailer and brake repair- this is usually graded on a pass-fail basis.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

We make every effort to inform candidates of their status in the hiring process when leaving their branch visit- whether we are waiting to finish interviewing other finalists or want to make an offer that same day!

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

This varies based on your availability to come visit us- our schedules change quickly as the branch can get busy, but we are flexible and can sometimes schedule a same-day visit. For the right candidate, this could mean just a few days between application and offer.

Trailer Mechanic Pay Range: $26.00 - $27.00/hour

Anticipating $26-$27/hr depending on trailer repair experience. 40hrs/week guaranteed and a reliable Monday-Friday daytime schedule.
