Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Shop is heated with radiant heat in the floor, shop is not air conditioned but we have several large fans

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We are a smaller team, we currently have 6 shop techs, 4 road techs, 2 parts people, 3 management, and 6 sales staff

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Our summer hours are Monday - Thursday 7AM - 5:30PM, we do work 7AM-12PM on Fridays durning the winter. We do offer Overtime for who ever wants to work it.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We provide, jack, jack stands, speciality tools, 3/4" and 1" drive tools. We expect technicians to have 1/2 drive tools and smaller

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have a large break room with a large dining room table that sets 12 people. We have multiple refrigerators, 2 micro waves and a dishwasher. We also have a washer and dryer available so if you get oil soaked through your uniforms you done need to take those items home and ruin your own washer etc..

How many bays does your shop have?

We have 5 bays in out main location and 3 in our satellite shop

How many repair orders do you average per month?

There is a wide range for this between 100 - 300 per month

What is your parts ordering process?

We have dedicated parts personal to assist with parts ordering. We like emails to be sent by the tech to the parts personnel requesting parts so we have a paper trail.

What is your policy on side work?

We allow side work as long as it is not on Emergency vehicles

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We offer an efficiency bonus program based on billable work. This can range from $500 - $2500 per month. This is between $3.13 and $15.63 per hour in bonus money based on 160 hours per month

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We offer on going training with Cummins and various industry specific manufactures. We send technicians to various schooling throughout the year.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We start techs in the shop and advance them road techs when management feels they are ready. There may be opportunity to advance away from mechanics intop management and or sales

Can you describe your performance review process?

We perform 30 day, 90 day, and 180 day reviews after hire. Then semi annually after that.

What type of safety training is required?

We require state mandated training at hire. This includes, fire extinguisher safety, power tool safety, emergency evacuation plans, and safety belt usage.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We assign new techs to work with senior techs for approximately 90 days. This can be shortened or extended based on their progression. We rotate techs between senior techs so they see all aspects of the business

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We participate in local Christmas parades. We have veteran community days at our facility.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We work with the local BOCES program and have interns that work with us a couple hours a day a few days a week

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We see the shop adding a 2nd building in Ballston Lake to be a collision and fabrication shop. We also see our satellite shop building our own location the same size as Ballston Lake

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We have a standard employment application, normally take about 10 minutes to complete.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes we do do a brief phone screening prior to an in person interview.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

In person interview starts with the GM and HR rep. If they feel the candidate is a good fit a drivers license abstract will be pulled and the applicate will be asked to take a pre employment drug screening

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

License check and pre employment drug screening

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No we do not. We may walk an individual around a truck and ask them to identify certain components.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

24-48 hours depending on how long it takes for the drug screening results to come back.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Parts Counterman Pay Range: $18.00 - $25.00/hour

Hourly paid position This position may be considered bonus-eligible after 90 days.

Heavy Duty / Emergency Apparatus Technician Pay Range: $22.00 - $32.00/hour

Hourly paid position Desired training, ASE or EVT certifications, CDL Class B License, NYS Inspectors license for Groups 1 & 2

Student Tech / Apprentice Pay Range: $18.00 - $22.00/hour

1ST Year apprentice will start at $18-$20. 2ND Year apprentice will be $20-$22, after that will move to Tech rate

Health Insurance Offered
Health insurance is offered on the 1st of the month following your hire. We pay 60% of the single premium for the 1st year and then we increase to the company paying 70% of the single premium. Family plans are available.

Retirement Plan Offered
401K plan offered either Jan 1 of July 1 following your 1 year anniversary. We match 4% dollar for dollar. We also offer profit sharing at the end of the calander year based on the companies profitability.
Sick Leave Offered
We offer 40 hours of PSL every calendar year. This is pro-rated the 1st year. Everyone gets 40 hours on January 1st.
Vacation Offered
We offer vacation after your 1 year anniversary. It is based on longevity
Paid Holidays Offered
We offer 8 paid holidays per year New Years Day Memorial Day 4th of July Labor Day Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

We provide uniforms, t-Shirts and hats. We also pay a boot allowance annually.
