Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our shop is currently heated. Air conditioning is a planned addition, hopefully being completed during calendar year 2022.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

Our current team consists of 14 technicians. The technicians coordinate directly with 5 service advisors, 3 parts specialists, and one service manager.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Hours of Operation for Parts and Service 7:00am - 8:00pm (Monday-Friday) 7:00am - 3:30pm (Saturday) Closed on Sunday Shift hours are somewhat flexible but the main shift hours are 7:00am to 3:30 pm for first shift and 11:30am to 8:00pm for second shift.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

All major shop equipment, brand specific specialty tools, diagnostic laptop software and interface devices are provided.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Fridge, microwave, table, chairs, sink, open seating, vending available

How many bays does your shop have?

Our facility has 20 truck bays plus a brake and suspension diagnostic bay containing a VIS-Check machine. In addition to this the facility also includes a chassis dynamometer and wash bay under roof.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We currently average about 350 RO's per month with intention to grow through improved focus and our new facility infrastructure.

What is your parts ordering process?

We utilize an electronic parts request system where the technician submits parts requests through assigned laptop. That parts request is then handled through a dashboard system by any available parts specialist. This minimizes the amount of time the technician spends with parts requests, minimizes dwell times for parts requests, and provides clear visibility to the status of all parts requests in the shop.

What is your policy on side work?

Side work or moonlighting has never been a point of contention here but our policy is that the technician should never engage in direct competition with TAG by trying to acquire side work through our current or conquest customer base.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Our new world class facility conveniently located right off the interstate is built with efficiency in mind while providing the best customer and employee amenities possible.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We offer and encourage WEB based training as well as instructor lead training at our state of the art facility in Memphis.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Growth is encouraged here at TAG. We take pride in the amazing employees we have and want them grow in their career with us at TAG. Many of our managers were technicians in the past.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We require yearly performance reviews. This usually happens at the employee's anniversary date. Employees and their managers will take about an hour to sit down and go over the achievements and struggles from the past year.

What type of safety training is required?

Safety training is required for every technician and is a part of the onboarding process.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Mentoring and coaching is strongly encouraged at TAG. Many of our younger techs will train with more experienced tech or watch them perform a job that they have not done before.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We are actively involved in local charities through fundraising and direct participation. We also sponsor local youth sporting events.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We currently work with our local community college by providing brand specific training and assist in workforce placement.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We see ourselves being even bigger and better in five years. It is only the beginning for us here at TAG of Springfield!

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

We love to see our employees growing and constantly raising the bar. The nature of the attitude at our shop is for every employee to flourish and grow.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We have an application form that typically takes anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour to complete.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We can do phone or in person interviews. However, in person is preferred so that we can have that face to face interaction and get a feel for personality.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

We cover a range of topics including pay plan, company benefits, technician skills and certification, current inventory of tools, years of experience, and prior work history. We also cover any goals for training and or promotions.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We do perform background checks and drug tests before you start working for TAG. We also perform randomly selected drug tests once every few months while you are an employee for TAG.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We do not require a skill assessment before hiring an applicant. We rely on the integrity of the applicants and the experience they put on their application and resume.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Typically we will get back to applicants within 72 hours.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Typically the whole process will take about a week.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

Each employee goes through a new hire orientation that covers many topics covering the history and values of the company. Each Springfield new hire also gets taken on a tour of the dealership with the general manager.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $55,000 - $67,000/year

Hourly plus bonus on production

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $42,000 - $50,000/year

Hourly plus bonus on production

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $35,000 - $40,000/year

Hourly plus bonus on production

Health Insurance Offered
TAG offers health, dental and vision insurance through United HealthCare. We offer coverage for employees only, employee/spouse, employee/child(ren) or family coverage. TAG offers you two comprehensive medical plans through United Healthcare. There is a a traditional copay plan as well as a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), which can be paired with a Health Savings Account (HSA). TAG makes a bi-weekly contribution to your HSA. A few highlights of our health insurance plan are as follows: -Both plans pay 100% of preventative care -Virtual Visits through United Healthcare (Telemedicine) -Personal health care advisors -Rx 'N Go for 90 supplies of generic maintenance meds FREE with co-pay plan.
Dental Insurance Offered
Dental benefits are offered through United Healthcare. There is a Base Dental Plan with a $1000 benefit per covered member and a Dental Buy-Up Plan with a $1500 benefit per covered member. It also includes Orthodontia that covers children up to age 19.
Vision Insurance Offered
Vision benefits are offered through United Healthcare. This entails an eye exam copay, frame allowance, lens copay, four boxes of free contacts, and also contact allowance. Wide national network makes getting your eye exams easy!
Retirement Plan Offered
TAG matches 100% of the first 4% that you put into your account with Principal. We offer a traditional 401k (pre-tax contributions) and a Roth (after-tax contributions) plan for your retirement savings. To enter the plan, you must be 18 years of age.
Sick Leave Offered
Sick leave is included in our PTO (Paid Time Off) bank.
Vacation Offered
PTO is paid time off for vacation, sick and holidays all rolled into one! PTO is offered to all full time employees (30+ hours a week). You start earning PTO from the very first day you come to work for us! You continue to accrue until you reach the balance maximum. For example, 120 hours is equal to 15 days of PTO. 144 hours is equal to 18 days of PTO, etc. You never lose your PTO time, you continue to accrue it. It rolls over from year to year.
Paid Holidays Offered
As mentioned above, vacation and PTO are offered to all employees. PTO will be paid to cover major holidays. We are closed on holidays such as Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Day, etc. If it's a scheduled work day for you and we're closed, you'll still get paid by using your PTO!
ST / LT Disability Offered
Disability benefits provide you with partial income replacement in the event you are out of work due to an illness or injury off the job. Disability is offered on a voluntary basis through Mutual of Omaha. This included both short term and long term disability. The short term disability that we offer covers 60% of gross pay up to $1,000 per week. There is a 14 day waiting period and this can cover up to 24 weeks of disability. Taxes are not withheld. The long term disability that we offer covers 60% of gross pay up to $10,000 per month. Your benefits will remain in place until Normal Retirement Age for social security. There is a 180 day waiting period.
Life Insurance Offered
TAG understands the need for financial protection, and because of this, offers Basic Life and AD&D coverage at no cost to you. You are eligible for this benefit if you are working at least 30 hours per week. We also have voluntary life insurance if you should need additional coverage for yourself, spouse or children.
Uniforms Offered
Uniforms are provided for technicians that work at TAG Truck Center. In addition to uniforms, we also love to provide what we call "TAG Swag" for all of our employees. This included sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats, polos, etc. We love to see everyone walking around the dealership sporting their new TAG gear every year.
Other Offered
We have several benefits that are paid 100% by TAG Truck Center!!! -Two times your earnings in life insurance up to $500,000 -$3,000 Critical Illness Benefit for all eligible employees -$150 Wellness Benefit for any employee that completes a screening test (eye exam, dental appointment, wellness screen, PSA, mammogram, etc. $150 benefit for yourself, your spouse and $75 for each child. Benefit paid 1x per year, per person. We also offer voluntary Accident and Critical Illness Care insurance through Voya. Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?
