Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

No. We do have heaters and cooling fans to help with the different temperatures. We have 2 large port-a-cool fans that work well.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We are a small shop. There are 4 technicians and one Service Writer. The owner also works in the shop helping with diagnostics and repairs.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

The shop is open Monday through Thursday 8:00am-6:00pm and Fridays 8:00am - 5:30pm. Employees get an hour lunch each day. NO SATURDAYS or SUNDAYS!

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Lifts. Scanners (Snap-on: Zeus and Solus; Autel Maxis). Floor jacks, stiff arms, 2 brake lathes, 3 AC machines (2 R134a and 1 R1234YF), ball joint press, shop located computers for Shop Key use, welder, cutting torch and so much more to list.

What type of break room facility is provided?

The break room consists of a refrigerator, microwave, and table and chairs. There are also paper plates and plasticware available. Bottled water is provided at no expense to employees.

How many bays does your shop have?

Total of 10. 6 of them with lifts, 2 standard two post lifts, 2 heavy duty two post lifts and 2 drive-on lifts. One of the drive-on lift is dedicated to alignments.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We average around 200 RO's per month. This includes services along with major and minor repairs.

What is your parts ordering process?

Currently, the service advisor is in charge of ordering parts. Estimates are submitted by the technician; he quotes and orders.

What is your policy on side work?

Side work can only be completed after regular working hours and if approved by the owner. It is usually just limited to immediate family vehicles.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

There are opportunities to learn. Of course, there is on-the-job training where the owner or other technicians step in and help/ teach. There are online training options and when offered through the vendors, off-site classroom and hands-on shop training.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Most positions in the shop are commission-based. In this aspect, growth is in the employees' hands. Raises are given as the individual grows, learns more, and takes on all kinds of repairs. Compensation is also based on work quality, work ethics, and timeliness.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Performance reviews are given in person with the owners. There is always one given after the first of the year. At that time, they discuss their strengths and weaknesses and how they can grow. Periodically, throughout the year they will have another sit down just to talk with employees to discuss any issues that either party may have.

What type of safety training is required?

No official training is required. The use of gloves, safety glasses, and proper dress for welding or use of the cutting torch.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

There is no mentorship programs in place at this time.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We do sports sponsorships with the different schools. We also sponsor a couple of local festivals.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Not at this time. It is something that we are hoping to be able to do in the future.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes. We think it is good for both us and the individual applying to speak ahead of time to see if the fit is right. Also to be sure the position being filled is something the applicant understands and can handle.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

All the basics. We learn about the applicant and the individual has an opportunity to ask us any questions they may have. Verbal skill assessment and an in-person tour of the facility.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Currently, we do not.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

Just a verbal assessment is given. We list what we do and the applicant can be open and honest about what they can and cannot do. If the applicant is hired and struggles with specific skills we will work to train properly (as long as they are willing to learn).

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Typically within 2-5 business days.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

It depends on all the variables, from phone calls to in-person interviews.

Repair and service technician Pay Range: $18.00 - $27.00/hour

This is a commission-based position. Pay will be discussed and will be based on the skill of the applicant. Do not let the minimum or maximum amount deter you from applying.

Superior Automotive is closed the week between Christmas and New Years (the actual dates vary depending on how the holiday falls). This a paid closure. After one year of employment, the employee will have one week of vacation.
