Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shop is fully heated in the winter and has state of the art air circulation to keep it cool in the summer!

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

There are just a handful of technicians that work directly with a team lead, so that each technician gets the personal attention they need to be successful. This is a "team" and we have a number of "teams" throughout the shop.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

4 or 5 day work schedule depending upon the position.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We provide full built in start of the art tool boxes that includes a personal computer or tablet. All special tools needed to work on Subarus are also included.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Technicians have access to a new full-size breakroom equipped with a full size refrigerator, freezer, coffee machine, and microwave. The breakroom is also equipped with several tables for technicians to enjoy meals at.

How many bays does your shop have?

We have three shops with a total of 50 bays

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Over 3000 per month

What is your parts ordering process?

Technician submits the parts request using our MPI system to the service advisor the advisor approves the parts and it automatically gets sent to the parts department electronically . The technician gets notified that the part is ordered and the vehicle will be leaving or staying.

What is your policy on side work?

You are allowed to work on your personal vehicle only at Sommers when you are not scheduled to work.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Sommer's is a bright, positive and very unique environment to work in which is focused on growth and success of our technicians. We invite anyone to come visit and find out for themselves!

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

All technician training is completely paid for by Sommer's! Up to a $9,000 bonus for tuition and tools goes to any student graduating from any technical college with at least a technical diploma in automotive repair or maintenance. WOW!! All manufacturer training programs paid for by Sommer's including to and from the training centers. We want all of our technicians to succeed!

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Any technician that wants to grow their career and income, we will make it happen with our training and your commitment. We have plenty of success stories here that have followed this path to grow their careers, skill sets and earnings!

Can you describe your performance review process?

We review performance on a daily basis and then we do annual reviews.

What type of safety training is required?

We have a full online compliance and safety training available for every staff member. We also provide the staff with ear and eye protection as well.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We are a mentor shop-everyone has someone they can go to and work with for training and to be successful. We also have team leaders in our shops and their responsibility is to help diagnose issues, and educate other technicians on how to repair vehicles. We want you to succeed!

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We are involved with many, many local organizations along with volunteering of our time to assist in making our community a better place.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We visit high school and tech colleges encouraging students to be part of the automotive industry. We donate cars, engines and parts to these technical colleges for students to work on. We are also involved in the technicians of tomorrow competition every year as well. This is all part of our desire to make sure technicians have great opportunities and grow!

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We just completed building a new state of the art service expansion facility to accommodate our growth-the future is bright for the dealership, the brand, the industry and any technician that wants to join us!

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Yes we have an application form normally it takes most individuals around 15-20 minutes to complete

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We will talk on the phone first, but we prefer in person to show everyone the facility and the people here. We want you to know us and we want to know you!

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Meeting with our service director, a tour of the facility, and meeting the technicians that you would be working with.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We perform background checks, drug pre screening as well as a drivers license check.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No, skill set is discussed during the interview process.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

After the process is completed, within 24 hours you will receive the necessary information.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Within 5 business days.

A Level Technician Pay Range: $80,000.00 - $150,000.00/year

Compensation varies based on education, training, production, and ability to work with others.

B Level Technician Pay Range: $65,000.00 - $85,000.00/year

Compensation varies based on education, training, production, and ability to work with others.

C Level Technician Pay Range: $45,000.00 - $65,000.00/year

Compensation varies based on education, training, production, and ability to work with others.

Service Advisor Pay Range: $80,000.00 - $120,000.00/year

Compensation varies based on education, training, production, and ability to work with others.

Lube Technician Pay Range: $44,000.00 - $50,000.00/year

Compensation varies based on education, training, production, and ability to work with others.

Student Tech / Apprentice Pay Range: $40,000.00 - $48,000.00/hour

Compensation varies based on education, training, production, and ability to work with others.

Health Insurance Offered
Group medical insurance is available to all employees scheduled 30 or more hours a week. Coverage will become effective on the first (1st) day of the month following thirty (30) days of continuous employment. Sommer's Automotive pays a 50% of the premium.

Group dental insurance is available to all employees scheduled 30 or more hours a week. Coverage will become effective on the first (1st) day of the month following thirty (30) days of continuous employment.
Vision Insurance Offered
Group Vision insurance is available to all employees scheduled 30 or more hours a week. Coverage will become effective on the first (1st) day of the month following thirty (30) days of continuous employment. It's free at the employee level and just a small fee to add dependents.
Retirement Plan Offered
This Plan is designed to assist employees planning for retirement. After completing one year of continuous service with Sommer’s, employees who have worked at least 1,000 hours each year are eligible to participate in Sommer’s Inc. Employee’s Profit-Sharing Plan. Enrollment is on a quarterly basis. As part of the plan Sommer's Automotive offers a 401k deferral option with a company match up to 4%.
