Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our new 26,000 sq. ft. shop is heated for the winter with Temperature control in each bay. We also have large fans with plenty of air movement making our shop very comfortable all season long.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

The La Vergne team includes 15 techs and five supporting staff members.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

7am - 5pm (Most work is conducted during normal business hours, occasionally overtime is required outside of these hours.)

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We provide all specialty tools, including laptops and anything that is machine-specific.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have two break rooms, and a locker room.

How many bays does your shop have?

At 26,000 sq. ft, we have one of the largest shops in the Nashville area with 12 oversize bays and two 10 ton gantry overhead cranes.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We receive approximately 300-400 repair orders per month, which include repairs in the shop and out in the field.

What is your parts ordering process?

We have a state-of-the-art Kardex Remstar storage management system, which allows employees to quickly and easily locate equipment parts. Techs send the parts numbers via email to our fully staffed parts department for ordering.

What is your policy on side work?

We do not allow side work.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Every six months, each employee gets an opportunity to sit down with the Service Manager to discuss his/her performance and how we can improve.

What type of safety training is required?

Each employee goes through a minimum of eight hours of safety training annually in General industry OSHA Compliance . They may also need to attend additional training that is required by clients, site specific, etc. .

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We have a long history of apprenticeship and teaching the trade to all those who are interested! Our apprentice Techs do hands-on work in our shop, where they are mentored by their peers, Shop Foremen, Service Manager and Store Manager.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We support several local charities and work closely with the City of La Vergne and other municipalities in an effort to truly be a part of our community.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

At all our locations, Scott Equipment works with high schools and tech schools to offer students training and job opportunities. At the La Vergne location, we work with freshman at Lincoln Tech, providing hands-on, paid internships.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

Scott has been in the Nashville area for more than 18 years, so we have seen firsthand how the area has grown, and specifically how the construction industry has exploded. As a result, we have built this new, larger facility in La Vergne that will allow us to grow our fleet and our personnel to help meet construction industry demands in Middle Tennessee. We currently have 15 Techs, but estimate to have 20-25 Techs by 2030.

Occasionally we reach out to an applicant by phone to get more information about their work experience and what they are looking for in their next job.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

When conducting in-person interviews we like to discuss work history, work experiences, and specific skill sets that could be helpful. We also like to talk about the Scott Companies' 80-year history and our unique work culture.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

After filling out our online questionnaire, a thorough background check and drug screening will be conducted. We do not give personality tests.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No matter what your education or experience is, we want to talk to you! While some of our Techs have extensive work experience, most are hired for their positive attitude and can-do spirit.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Pending the background check and drug screen, most applicants hear back from us within 72 hours of the in-person interview.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Our hiring process usually takes about two weeks.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $62,400 - $83,200/year ($30.00 - $40.00/hr)

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $52,000 - $62,400/year ($25.00 - $30.00/hr)

Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
