Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Yes, our shop is both heated and air conditioned.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We have a team of 5 quick lube techs and 16 mainline techs in the service department. In the Collision Center we currently have 5 technicians. We also have 3 apprentice technicians. We schedule by technician. Schulte Subaru has 144 total employees.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Our shop is open from 7:30am - 5:30pm M-F. The majority of our technicians follow the schedule below... M-F 7:15am - 5:30pm We are willing to discuss schedule upon hire. We also allow our employees to take up to an hour lunch if they choose.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

The dealership provides tool boxes. We have a tool program for techs that are just starting out in the field.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Our break room is equipped with two tables for seating, a refrigerator, microwave, pop machine, fancy coffee machine, air fryer, sinks, a closet for uniforms, lockers and two bathrooms. All of this is free for our employees to use.

How many bays does your shop have?

We currently have 16 main bays in service, 3 express service bays and 2 alignment bays. We also have 5 bays in detail and 8 bays in the collision center and 2 window tint bays. We are building a new 50,000 square foot collision center so there will be more bays available in about 1 year from September 2023.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

2,000 roughly

What is your parts ordering process?

Technicians have 2 options. They can physically walk to the parts department and order parts or use Tekion, our DMS, and order parts directly through that using their computer.

What is your policy on side work?

We allow side work on the weekends/evenings as long as there is a manager in the building and you have received prior approval from the fixed ops manager.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We are always trying to stay on the cutting edge and continually update our equipment and shop as needed.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We offer our techs onsite training as well as the opportunity to attend Subaru School where they can take classes in Minneapolis (all expenses paid) to become a Subaru Master Technician. Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Can you describe your performance review process?

We conduct annual performance reviews which consist of a self review and manager review. The discussion generally includes how things are going, performance, goals and making sure you have everything you need to be successful.

What type of safety training is required?

We require all of our techs to complete their online safety training during onboarding. We are also working on developing a more robust safety program.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We have one of our master techs that is paid on a different pay plan so that he can be available to mentor younger techs. Many of our master technicians will take the younger ones under their wings to help them reach their potential.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We are very involved in our community. We put on many events for the community such as Cars & Coffee (our monthly car show) and a haunted Halloween drive thru. We also partner with so many local organizations to give back. Visit our facebook page "Schulte Subaru" or our website to learn more!

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We partner with the local high school sand vo-tech programs to help encourage students to enter the field. We do frequent tours for students, job shadows and we also visit the schools as well.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

With the expansion of the Sioux Falls Tire & Collision Center, we see a thriving shop with great opportunities for technicians. We will be continuing our commitment to providing a great place to work and top of the line customer service.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes, we perform a light screen to see where the applicants interest level is and discuss their background lightly.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

All applicants will interview with either our Fixed Ops Director or Assistant Fixed Ops Director along with either the General Manager, HR or Owner. Discussion includes what the position entails, information about the culture of Schulte Subaru, and questions about the candidates background, experience and future goals, etc.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Up to a week, but typically within a couple of days depending on how many candidates we are interviewing. You will be told during your interview what timeframe to expect for a follow-up.

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $35,000.00 - $60,000.00/year

Our lube techs work in teams. On each team there is a lead that is paid flat rate and a helper that is paid hourly.

Service Advisor
Service Advisors are primarily customer focused and, as one of the faces of the shop, they are critical in keeping customers happy. Service Advisors are frequently focused on taking customer calls, relaying information to technicians, and selling repair jobs. Both technical and sales experience are helpful for this position.
Pay Range: $60,000.00 - $90,000.00/year

Our service advisors are paid on a pay plan based on hours sold and individual/team goals met. They also have a potential bonus based on customer satisfaction scores driven by surveys from the manufacturer.

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $35,000.00 - $50,000.00/year

Our student techs/apprentices are paid hourly. This is an opportunity to learn and grow.

Subaru Master Technician Pay Range: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00/year

Our Master technicians are paid a flat rate with a weekly bonus opportunity based on hours turned.

Service Technician Pay Range: $50,000.00 - $80,000.00/year

Our PTO policy applies to all full-time hourly and flat rate employees. It is based on the years of service. PTO accrues as follows... After completion of 90-day introductory period: 10 days of PTO After completion of 1 year: 20 days PTO* (5 days) After completion of 5 years of continuous service: 25 days of PTO* (10 days) *A portion (as indicated in the parenthesis above) of the PTO amount the employee is allotted will be use-it-or-lose-it. Meaning, at the end of his/her anniversary date, any unused PTO of this type will be lost. The remaining balance of PTO will be treated as regular PTO. The use-it-or-lose-it PTO will be used first before the regular PTO is used. At the end of his/her anniversary date, any unused regular PTO will be paid during the next scheduled pay period.

This is a great benefit for employees and can be very helpful for loved ones in the case of an unexpected loss. We also offer voluntary life insurance that you can enroll in to add additional life insurance.
