Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

We are a small shop with 8 bays. We want two bays per tech. We are in the process of painting the shop, Floor, and lifts. We are getting bids to have the shop climate controlled.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We feel we can make it with four techs. This will allow our techs to get the hours hey need,

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

We are 7:30-5 Monday-Friday closed weekends. We are also willing to go to 4-10's and give three days of. We are very Flexible.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Latest and greatest tools and equipment. All specialty tools and commonly used shop tools are provided.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Employees have employee-only break rooms.

How many bays does your shop have?

8 and alignment rack. Hunter

How many repair orders do you average per month?

350-450

What is your parts ordering process?

We can typically get parts the next day or same if not in our inventory. Most fast moving parts are on hand.

What is your policy on side work?

We encourage employees to use our shop and offer deeply discounted rates for employee owned vehicles.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We are highly motivated to have trained employees. The latest and greatest training will always be available to employees. This is a crucial part of being successful in an industry that is always changing.

At Scherer Lincoln one of the fastest growing shops in the area loves creating numerous opportunities for career growth. Any time there is an opportunity for advancement we always look to fill the opportunity from within the company first.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We Are a small tight nit group. Performance reviews are an on going day to day thing. We believe in an open door policy and love coaching on a daily basis. We always encourage people to speak up and any time they would like to sit down I personally will sit with their managers to listen to any concerns or aspirations anyone might have.

What type of safety training is required?

You will be trained on all tools and equipment before beginning to use them.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Our shop is well balanced between those who have been turning wrenches for decades, those who are just learning the trade, and everyone in between. Our shop is eager to mentor younger tech always.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Our company has deep roots in the Peoria area. We support our community by being involved in fundraising events, donating to dozens of local causes, sponsoring local Collage sports, and more.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Unfortunately we have no real local programs for Tech education. But always eager and willing to support one if it appears.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

In a word: growth. Our business has continued to expand in creative ways, creating unique opportunities for employees. This store has struggled in the past but with new ownership we are confident with the right people we will be the comeback story in this areas.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We prefer in person interviews.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Interviews are usually in-person though we offer phone or zoom interviews to out-of-town applicants. Interviews involve a 15-30 minute discussion with one to three managers and myself as GM.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We have our checks as needed.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Usually we will have an answer within a day or two from an in-person interview.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

This varies greatly across different positions and skill levels. The entire process could be as quick as a few days.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $80,000 - $110,000/year ($38.46 - $52.88/hr)

Flat rate pay plan. Willing to guarantee 40 hours a week for the right person. We expect our techs to be able to turn-50-60 a week.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $72,000 - $92,000/year ($34.62 - $44.23/hr)

Flat rate pay plan. Willing to guarantee 40 hours a week for the right person. We expect our techs to be able to turn-50-60 a week.

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $57,000 - $70,000/year ($27.40 - $33.65/hr)

Flat rate pay plan. Willing to guarantee 40 hours a week for the right person. We expect our techs to be able to turn-50-60 a week.

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $30,000 - $40,000/year

Health Insurance Offered
Coverage through People's First Health Strategies, utilizing the Cigna provider network. Scherer Automotive covers 75% of the premium for the Employee. Two plans are offered: Co-pay plan and High Deductible plan. Deductibles range between $3000-$9000 depending on coverage. Employees are eligible for coverage the 1st of the month after two months of employment.
Dental Insurance Offered
Coverage through Delta Dental of Illinois. Premiums range from $24-$73 monthly, depending on coverage. 100% coverage for preventative work (cleanings, x-rays, etc). Employees are eligible for coverage the 1st of the month after two months of employment.
Vision Insurance Offered
Coverage through DeltaVision/Eye Med. Premiums range from $7-$21 monthly, depending on coverage. Employees are eligible for coverage the 1st of the month after two months of employment.
Retirement Plan Offered
Managed by American Funds LLC. Employees are eligible after one year of employment. Matching varies from year to year. Currently offer 3% matching for 2022.
Sick Leave Offered
Paid PTO for Full-time Employees (35+ hours avg per week): 4 days of Personal Time Off (PTO) per year, prorated based on start date and accrued per quarter.
