Sanford Firestone is a fourth-generation, family-owned service center located at 705 Hickey Blvd in the Fairmont Shopping Center, one block west of Skyline Hwy. 35. We've been owners for 50 years and counting, providing complete car maintenance and automotive repair services for customers in the Greater Bay area, including the Pacifica, Daly City, and San Francisco communities. We're a STAR Certified smog check and repair station with high quality parts in stock and leading brands of tires for sale. Our inventory features ACDelco auto parts, Interstate Batteries, OEM parts, and tires from Bridgestone, Firestone, and Fuzion. We’re open Monday through Saturday 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The office is air conditioned and heated.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

There are about 10-12 staff, including 5 techs and 4 service writers.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Shop hours are Monday-Saturday, 7:30am-5:00pm. Shifts are 8 hours with a lunch. Techs will work 5 days/week, including some Saturdays each month.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

There are a variety of specialty tools available

What type of break room facility is provided?

There is a break room area in the office, which includes a microwave, toaster, refrigerator, 5 gallon bottled water, and coffee all day!

How many bays does your shop have?

6

How many repair orders do you average per month?

About 400-500

What is your parts ordering process?

Needed parts are ordered online by service writers. We work with several warehouses to get things as quickly as possible - usually within an hour.

What is your policy on side work?

No side work.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We encourage training and skill building whenever possible. We encourage classes through ATI, will pay for ASE licensing, and encourage training through Identifix & ALLDATA.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

There are opportunities to grow within the shop. There are opportunities to take classes through Hunter, and we can work with techs for reimbursement to attend Hunter classes. Partner vendors also offer classes if techs are interested.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Coaching is available as needed.

What type of safety training is required?

Informal safety training is provided as needed. We review the San Mateo County Hazard Business Plan in case of emergency.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We believe in working together and having seasoned techs mentor newer techs.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Our owner has been on local Chamber of Commerce and looks to help the community as much as possible. We also make donations to venues in the city of Pacifica.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We enjoy working with the Skyline College auto department, getting students involved in our shop and job shadowing for their future careers.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

Growing! We are always staying busy and trying to bring in more business.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

There is a standard Firestone application, which is 2 pages and takes about 15 minutes to complete.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

In-person interviews are preferred.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

The in-person interview will entail discussing the candidate's past work experience & training, career goals, and a verbal skill assessment.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We conduct a reference check and also a personality test through ATI. We also take a copy of the candidate's driver's license.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

A verbal skill assessment is done during the interview.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

1-2 days as long as all checks clear.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Ideally within 1 week.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $61,000 - $73,000/year ($29.33 - $35.10/hr)

$28-35/hour with room for growth. A Level techs needed to do alignment; smog inspection; certified air conditioning. Pay is based off of 40 hour work week.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $57,000 - $63,000/year ($27.40 - $30.29/hr)

$28-30/hour; pay will depend on experience and knowledge.

Lube and Tire Technician Pay Range: $48,000 - $55,000/year ($23.08 - $26.44/hr)

$23-26/hour. Will assist with oil changes, vehicle safety inspections, tire repairs, etc.

Smog Technician Pay Range: $59,000 - $68,000/year ($28.37 - $32.69/hr)

Hourly rate. Based on 40 hours/week.
