What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

13 to 15 in the service department and another 4 in the parts department.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

8:00am- 6:00pm Monday thru Friday. Lube techs and minimal support on Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

General use tools in lube rack special tools / computers / FDRS / IDS VCM II & III VMM Fiber Optic dedicated internet Fluid exchange machines / Maintenance machines

What type of break room facility is provided?

Dedicated Employee Kitchen with refrigerator, heating and air conditioning.

How many bays does your shop have?

14

How many repair orders do you average per month?

1500 - 2000

What is your parts ordering process?

We do it through your bay on the computer, at the counter or on the phone. .

We have a policy of integrity..

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Northgate Ford is unique in that the service manager is technician's manager. Coming from the working side of the business he understands the challenges technicians face and takes those into account when decisions are made. The general rule of thumb is that a tie goes to the technician.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

All technicians are encouraged and supported to become Master Certified. Ford Motor Company training is done here online and at the classroom at a Ford facility. We pay the tech for the training that he does and cover any costs incurred with the training.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

As stated above, until a tech becomes Master Certified, he has room and opportunity for growth. Compensation continues to increase as a tech's certifications increase.

Can you describe your performance review process?

While the service manager does not micromanage, he is very involved with diag and repair when necessary. His working closely with all the technicians gives him the opportunity to help them become more proficient. That increase in proficiency lends the tech to becoming more valuable, increasing his flat rate pay and being able to increase his hours per day.

What type of safety training is required?

Lauer Group / MIOSHA / OSHA approved Training

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Every apprentice is trained with hands on the vehicle. As he becomes more competent, he starts and completes the repairs he is capable of, with the senior tech ensuring and being responsible for proper repairs. As stated, our goal is for all technicians to become Master Certified as soon as they can. Our senior techs benefit from your advancement, and productivity as they are credited with what you are able to produce.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Aside from the service department do mobile repairs and picking up and delivering customers vehicles in the area, The dealership as a whole is very involved with the community, mainly supporting the local hospital with financial support for those who cannot afford important screening services.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We are partnered with Ford with the SOS (sponsor our students) program that is combined with the Top Techs program that benefits our techs financially. This would include all of the schools in our area.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

Our growth in the last 5 years has been significant. As we continue to do an excellent job of fixing vehicles right the first time, and we continue to see an increase in visiting owners from other dealerships, we expect similar growth in the future. With that said, we obviously need to increase our technician base to support that growth.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

While the reality is that technicians are going to be needed long into the future, it's important to have an environment that individuals appreciate and enjoying being in. We provided that environment. That environment allows individuals to grow in their craft and benefit financially and personally. We have very little technion turnover for that reason.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Yes. Not long, basic information is all that is required.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

In most cases your resume gives us a good idea if you would be a fit for us. If location is an issue, we can set up zoom meetings to begin the interview process.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Once you have spent a few minutes with the HR department, you will spend the majority of your time with the service manager. He is the one qualified and responsible for making sure those that we hire are a good fit for our dealership. While skill sets are important, so are many other personality traits that effect a good working environment. If there seems to be integrity issues, you likely are not a good fit for our company.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We do require a physical and drug screening for any illegal drugs. Michigan has changed its laws recently and we have changed with them.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

Your experience will tell us some, but the service manager, with almost 40 years in the business is usually able to tell how competent you relevant to your training and experience.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

If you are the right person, we will make you an offer within a day or two. The fact of the matter is, if you are qualified, you are one of few that has applied for the job that is. It does not take us long to figure that out, and we will move quickly to add you to the team.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

2 to 4 days.

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $11.00 - $14.00/hour

Hourly wage based on experience and certifications.

Collision Technician - A Level Pay Range: $65,000.00 - $100,000.00/year

We pay 50% of the labor per job.

Collision Prepper Pay Range: $15.00 - $17.00/hour

Hourly wage based on experience.

Automotive Tech Apprentice Pay Range: $15.00 - $17.00/hour

Hourly wage based on experience and certifications.

Body Shop Manager Pay Range: $60,000.00 - $85,000.00/year

Annual compensation based on salary and monthly bonus based on department profit.
