Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shop is both heated and air conditioned to keep our techs comfortable in their work environment!

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

The average team is 5 technicians, including one team lead.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

4 day or 5 day work schedule. This varies based on technicians needed schedule and hours.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

All technical tools from Subaru are provided. Technicians have the option to purchase additional tools or bring their own tools that they currently own.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Technicians have access to a new full-size breakroom equipped with a full size refrigerator, espresso machine, coffee machine, and microwave. The breakroom is also equipped with several tables for technicians to enjoy meals at.

How many bays does your shop have?

Our shop has 40 bays.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Mike Shaw Subaru averages 2500-3000 repair orders per month.

What is your parts ordering process?

Many parts are stored at the shop location. More special order parts can be requested and approved through the parts department.

What is your policy on side work?

No side work is permitted.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Brand new employee locker room complete with lounge chairs and TVs is a perk all technicians get to utilize.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Skills training courses are offered to technicians. Training is also paid for most positions. On-site training and online digital training programs are available. Educational reimbursement program is also offered for technicians.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Our company offers a digital pathing tool program for employees to utilize. We believe in promoting from within.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Technicians performance is continually monitored and noted. However, there are semi-annual technician performance review completed by the service manager.

What type of safety training is required?

Technician safety training is offered virtually or in person through Subaru of America.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Many technicians start as apprentices. This means that they will be paired with a more experienced technician whom they will work alongside to learn and grow and advance their skills. The master tech and the apprentice tech will work together daily to ensure quality work and learning is being completed.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Mike Shaw Subaru prides itself on community outreach and commitment. As a company, we participate in the Subaru Love Promise which gets us involved in local charities, schools, homeless shelters and animal shelters.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We work with several trade schools and tech schools to encourage technician programs and training,

Where do you see the shop in five years?

As Mike Shaw continues to grow, we expect this to continue within the next 5 years and even beyond that. With our brand new service center, we now have the space and ability to assist more customers than we ever have before.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Yes, we provide an electronic application form. The application form takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. Once the application is completed the potential employee will then complete a Caliper Assessment which takes 15-20 minutes.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

No, in most cases, the employee is invited in for an in-person interview.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

In-person interviews typically occur at our dealership where the potential hire will sit down with multiple management personnel. Typically the Service Manager, Assistant Service Manager and/or the Fixed Operations Director is present for in-person interviews. A few basic questions are asked, including what the potential hire is looking for in the job, what hours and days he or she can work, and what he or she values in a job.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes. Background checks as well as drug screening and personality tests are required for each employee prior to hiring.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We preform a Caliper assessment on all new hires. This is a form of a personality test that allows us to learn more about the employees personality, work style, interests and more. This assessment also records problem solving skills and the employees ability to work with a team.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $80,000 - $120,000/year

Compensation varies based upon skills certification and experience.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $70,000 - $100,000/year

Compensation varies based upon skills certification and experience.

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $35,000 - $90,000/year

Compensation varies based upon skills certification and experience.

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $35,000 - $45,000/year
