Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Shop is heated by in-floor heat, but is not Air Conditioned.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

There are 22 people in the shop. That includes parts, mechanics, service writer and floor leads.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

The Truck shop is open from 5 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Some team members work 5 am to 4 pm and others work 6 am to 5 pm. Saturday hours are from 5 am to 10 am. Techs typically work approximately 1 Saturday every 3 weeks.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

What type of break room facility is provided?

Our break room includes the following: tables, fridge, pizza oven, microwave, coffee machine, and a sink.

How many bays does your shop have?

5 bays on the Heavy Duty side and 7 on the Light Duty side.

How many repair orders do you average per month?


What is your parts ordering process?

Technicians drop off a parts request form and Parts Coordinators work with vendors to order the parts.

What is your policy on side work?

Michels Family of Companies vehicles and equipment are the only ones allowed in the shops. We do not discriminate against employees taking advantage of other opportunities outside of working hours.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

There is a on campus diner that provides restaurant style meals at product cost. We are Final Stage Certified Truck Builders.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We are Ford and Navistar certified so we have online access to training materials for all OEM. We spend an average of $5,000 per employee per year on training and development programs.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Technicians have the ability to promote within their current role or take a non-technician path if they are deemed the best candidate for the role.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Reviews are done 6 months after hire date and on an annual basis. However, we like to review performance everyday for continued development.

What type of safety training is required?

In-house safety training twice a year. Daily stretch and flex, and tailgate talk every morning and after lunch.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Teamwork is a core value here at Michels. We encourage all of our technicians to pass on their knowledge to anyone that is willing to learn.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Michels is very involved in the local communities and sponsor or donates to multiple events and charities.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We visit and speak to classrooms at the local high schools and technical colleges.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

Going from a combustible engine only fleet to including Electric vehicles.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

As new product lines come through the doors, we send technicians to OEM trainings to be able to bring back to the shop and share with other technicians.

You will meet with the Yard and Equipment Manager and the Shop Supervisor.

As a federal contractor, we do require drug screenings.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

We like to move as fast as possible depending the amount of applicants.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

We try to keep the hiring process from Application to Offer to under 2 weeks. Most qualified applicants will get through in less than a week.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

Reference checks are requested at the interview stage.

Light Duty Pay Range: $60,000 - $85,000/year

Light Duty Truck Mechanic is split into 3 levels and the pay is increased by years of experience and training. Our typical work week is 52 hours a week with flexibility built in for different life events that may come up. The wages include Overtime. Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic Pay Range: $65,000 - $90,000/year

Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic is split into 3 levels and the pay is increased by years of experience and training.
