What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

Our staff count is currently at 9. You'll be working with 3 other techs, 1 helper, a Service Advisor, 2 porters and the owners.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Shop Hours: Monday - Friday 7am-5:30pm All Techs work M – F but they are staggered in. No Saturdays. First in at 8, second 9 and third 10. Out times are 4, 5 and 6, respectively. The time a new person would be expected is negotiable but we would prefer an in time of 8 am and out at 4pm.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Lone Star Bavarian will purchase any special tools that the owner deems are un necessary for a tech to own. It is literally up to the techs. In addition to special hand tools, Lone Star Bavarian owns, maintains and pays fees for ISTA, Xentry and ODIS factory diagnostic tools.

What type of break room facility is provided?

There is an area set aside for techs which includes a refrigerator, microwave, bathroom, locker room and a place to relax.

How many bays does your shop have?

10 lifts and technically 10 bays but our shop is creatively laid out and all techs have at least two lifts.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

About 110 per month with our lead tech billing consistently 40 + hours a week.

What is your parts ordering process?

Parts are ordered by a parts guy which is currently the owner who has 30 years experience with it.

What is your policy on side work?

Side work of our makes and models is not allowed unless it is a close friend or family member and it must be done in our shop. If any tech is not making enough money working shop hours then we need to have that conversation. As an owner and tech with decades doing this, I feel that a technician’s time off should be just that, time off. The goal is that everyone is making enough that they don’t have to have another job.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Air conditioning in the shop. Music from cable broadband that can be whatever the techs want, but often the owner chooses and keeps it changing. Porters help keep the shop clean and floors are done with a walk behind floor machine. Clean and neat is our policy , which only gets a little relaxed when we are too busy to keep up.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

There are always opportunities to move up or advance. How that happens is up to the individual and their motivation.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We have annual reviews and if you are living up to the goals we set for you it can mean extra money.

What type of safety training is required?

We would never hire anyone we didn’t feel was self aware and a safe individual. If we have to teach you how to be safe in the shop then we aren’t the right shop for you.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

When we are training all of the techs work with a shop helper or tech in training. It is expected. Currently we are working with one that was promoted up from porter.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We support our local Lonestar BMW CCA chapter

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Lone Star Bavarian has created at least a dozen new young techs over the years. To date three are Master Techs at BMW dealerships, one runs another shop, one started his own shop.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

I have been here for 22 years. In 5 I will be looking for someone within the business to potentially take my shop over as I age out.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Yes, the paper version is about 30 minutes and can be emailed. The public application on the website is a preliminary.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

No but I do a pretty thorough email interview before asking you to come in person so as not to waste anyone’s time.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

It depends on what was put in the application or resume as to the questions or explanations or expanded answer that might be needed.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes we do a back ground check, no drug testing or personality profile test. The owner is very skilled at picking up on both without.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No but the interview does include some pointed questions that will help the owner assess your abilities. He has been a technician for 32 years and an owner of 22 years.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Depends on qualifications and when submitted. If qualified and we are to proceed through the whole process it can be a couple of days if scheduling for applicant and interviewer are accommodating.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

You will be interviewed by the owner first. He has been a technician for 32 years and an owner of 22 years. And then the shop foreman as a final.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $50,000 - $80,000/year ($24.04 - $38.46/hr)

Summers are black shorts and our uniform is Lone Star Bavarian T-shirts. Winters are black pants and Lone Star Bavarian T-shirts. T-shirts are cotton and pants/shorts are cotton from Dickies or if you prefer to provide your own shorts/pants in black, Lone Star Bavarian will reimburse you for cost. Black shoes that you feel are most comfortable for you.
