Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shop is heated with a used oil burner and natural gas heater. The shop does have a Big Ass Fan for air circulation.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

Generally around 10 people.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

We operate roughly from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We are looking to expand some into the mornings and evenings. Shift vary some but usually 40 to 50 hours a week.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

The shop provides any large permanent equipment and some unique or costly tools.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have an area with a refrigerator, microwave, and sink.

How many bays does your shop have?

The shop has approximately 5 bays with 3 lifts.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Most of our work is with our own fleet. We probably average about 40 plus work orders for the general public.

What is your parts ordering process?

Parts ordering is built into our shop management system.

What is your policy on side work?

Techs can work on their own vehicles off the clock. As long as they purchase their own parts and it doesn't interfere with their work we can work with them.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Our most unique feature is that we operate our own fleet which leads to pretty much never ending work.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Because we operate our own fleet we do come across a lot of unique issues which provides great on the job training. We will help pay for ASE with proof of certificate with passed tests.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We always want our techs to improve and do continuous education. The better you become and the better you perform then there is opportunity for advancement. We are also looking to grow our shop and services to the public possibly even to branch out into other locations.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We look at a number of factors such as attendance, quality of work, skill set, tool set, as well as KPIs in order to evaluate how a tech and or the garage division is doing.

What type of safety training is required?

Basic certificates such as state inspection and refrigerant. We will help a tech attain these if they do not have it.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

When the situations present themselves more experienced techs will work with younger techs on certain projects or jobs to show them how it is done.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We often go to events and set up a tent to market brand awareness about our services that we offer.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Not at this time.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We hope to grow the shop work to the general public by about 500% over the next 5 years.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We do have an application form. it takes about 5 minutes to fill out.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We will generally call, text, or email a person to come in for an in-person interview.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

We like to learn about the candidate including background, certifications, career path goals, and getting to know them as a person. We also leave time for them to ask questions and take them on a shop tour.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We do perform background checks.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We do ask certain questions or may present a problem to a candidate and ask them what they would do. It's mostly done through the discovery process.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Generally 1 to 5 days.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $50,000 - $80,000/year

Guaranteed hourly rate, potential overtime and bonuses.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $40,000 - $50,000/year

Guaranteed hourly rate, potential overtime and bonuses.

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $30,000 - $40,000/year

Guaranteed hourly rate, potential overtime and bonuses.

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $20,000 - $30,000/year

Guaranteed hourly rate, potential overtime and bonuses.

Service Advisor
Service Advisors are primarily customer focused and, as one of the faces of the shop, they are critical in keeping customers happy. Service Advisors are frequently focused on taking customer calls, relaying information to technicians, and selling repair jobs. Both technical and sales experience are helpful for this position.
Pay Range: $0 - $0/year

Guaranteed hourly rate, potential overtime and bonuses.

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $20,000 - $30,000/hour

Guaranteed hourly rate, potential overtime and bonuses.
