Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

We are located in Colma California close to the Pacific ocean. The temperature in the the shop rarely exceed 72 degrees. We have 6 heaters in the shop.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We have 4 teams 3 retail with 10 guys per a team including to leaders and 1 internal with 4 technicians

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

The shop hours are 7am to 6pm we have two alternating tech shift Mon- Fri 7-4pm and Tue-Sat 8-5pm

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We have a dedicated tool room with all required Lexus tools. Technicians provide their personal tool boxes and regular tool.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have two breakrooms with big screen tv's and kitchens with microwaves

How many bays does your shop have?

We have 47 lift bays and two alignment bays

How many repair orders do you average per month?

1600 retail repair orders

What is your parts ordering process?

Parts are ordered twice a day. Early order comes in same day, late day order comes in following day for most parts. We have an experienced back counter parts crew and we deliver parts to each team.

What is your policy on side work?

No side work allowed. You can work on your personal vehicle on your day off or after your shift ends with a repair order signed by manager.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We are on of the largest Lexus dealerships in the region and have an excellent customer base in one of the most affluent communities in the country. Our advisors are very proficient and perform very well.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

In addition to factory specific training, we offer tuition assistance to our teammates and their family through Bellevue University.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We look to promote from within whenever possible. We have developed an apprenticeship program for technicians that are new to the business.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We perform annual performance reviews.

What type of safety training is required?

Online safety training as well as facility inspections are performed by our corporate Risk Management team.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

The apprenticeship program offers a structured path to achieve knowledge and certification. Apprentice technicians are typically paired with a Master level technician who will follow a timeline to prepare the apprentice for success.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Community involvement is a core belief at Sonic Automotive. Our stores are encouraged to be involved with the communities they serve.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

As a company, Sonic Automotive works with as many local high schools and technical schools as possible to promote a career in automotive repair. This includes sponsoring classrooms, doing lunch and learns, speaking with students and parents at open houses, and participating in career fairs.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We see our shop as the fastest growing Lexus shop in hours generated and the go to Lexus technical shop in the bay area. We strive to provide an excellent work environment and the best technician compensation in the industry

Our Talent Development and Training teams have earned many awards and accolades including being inducted in Training Magazine's Hall of Fame

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We have an online application process that is very user friendly and should only take a few minutes to complete. In some cases, depending on which state you apply in, at the time of an interview we have the applicant complete an additional paper form.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We usually perform a quick phone screening prior to scheduling an interview.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

The in person interview usually consists of 1-2 dealership associates conducting the interview. During both the phone interview and in-person interview the candidate is given an opportunity to ask any questions that they may have about the job, our benefits, and company culture.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We do perform background and drug tests on all applicants. A reasonably clean driving record is required. we do employ an online assessment as a tool to get to know the candidate more than just what is on their resume.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No, skills are assessed through the discovery process during the interviews

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

That depends on the quantity of applicants, but our goal is to give candidate feedback on their candidacy in a timely manner.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Once a hiring decision has been made the process takes roughly 5 business days on average to complete the drug and background checks.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

The process may be different depending on the position you are applying for

Senior Technician Pay Range: $65,000 - $185,000/year

Flat rate compensation. Senior technician can perform most repairs including hybrid and recalls. ASE licenses and factory courses and Lexus tenure are required.

Base Certified Pay Range: $65,000 - $140,000/year

Flat rate compensation. Base technician has completed Lexus Foundation Tests and Lexus technical introduction course.

Technician Pay Range: $57,600 - $140,000/year

Entry level position. Typically a graduate of automotive program or a some technician work experience.
