Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our shop is comfortable during the winter with radiant heat mounted from the ceiling joists. During the Summer, our shop stays comfortable with the garage doors open and individual fans in the bays. We have R32 insulation in the roof which helps keep things cool. The break room is air conditioned.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We currently have 6 line technicians and 3 Express technicians in our CDJR and Mazda shop. Each technician works with a dedicated Service Advisor. We have 2 main shop Service Advisors and an Express Lane Service Advisor. John Sonday is our Service Director with 30 years of experience. Dan Albright is our Parts Manager with 40 years experience. As a team we're dedicated to making Ladd Hanford a great place to work and achieving high levels of customer satisfaction.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Monday to Friday 7:30AM to 5:00PM, plus every third Saturday from 7:30AM to 2:00PM.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We have all special tools provided by the manufacturer which are catalogued and organized in the tool rooms. We also all the necessary equipment to do your job in an efficient manner including those for AC, Suspension, Alignment, Tires, Wheels, etc. Hunter Alignment Machine is new in 2019. All tools and equipment are most up to date versions and each tech is provided his own computer laptop.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have a large break room above the shop with a large refrigerator, microwave and a TV with cable.

How many bays does your shop have?

We have 18 bays, including 4 truck lifts. 2 Bays are dedicated to Express and 1 Bay is dedicated to alignments with our Hunter Alignment Rack.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We average 1200 ROs per month with a good mix of Customer Pay, Internal and Warranty Work.

What is your parts ordering process?

Parts are ordered through the internal parts counter through one of our experienced Parts Counter Salespeople.

What is your policy on side work?

We allow technicians to work on their own personal cars outside of company hours.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Supplemental Warranty Pay! Multiple Bays per technician. Dedicated Service Advisor. On Site Ownership. Management that cares. Service Director with 30 years experience. Organized and Catalogued Special Tools. New Hunter Alignment Machine. Company supplied laptop for each technician Fun Family Atmosphere. Shop completely renovated in 2018 with new epoxy floors and LED lighting. All lifts pass OSHA inspections and many are brand new.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Continued ASE and Factory Training (including off site training) are encouraged and paid for by Ladd Hanford.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We encourage all technicians to achieve Master Technician levels. We encourage technicians to become full line technicians out of Express or Apprenticeship. Pay rates are increased with levels of training achieved.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Reviews are conducted on an ongoing basis by the Service Director.

What type of safety training is required?

Yearly safety training is required. We also have a safety committee. We are committed to a safe workplace.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We are proud of our team environment. Technicians are encouraged to seek guidance from any of our Master Technicians on a daily basis. We also offer an apprentice program where new technicians are paired with a Master Technician until training levels are completed.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We have board representation on the YMCA and Chamber of Commerce. We also support the United Way for the past 35 years by donating a car to the local campaign. We support the Rescue Mission, Christian Ministries and the YMCA Camp Shand and YMCA child care programs.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We provide internships for the right candidate in high school at the local career and technology school.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We would like to grow our shop to 10 factory trained technicians and continue to achieve the highest CSI and Fixed First Visit scores in the District.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

With opportunities to start in our Express Lane or as an Apprentice, we offer many opportunities for advancement to a full line technician. Some of our best technicians started as Express Technicians.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We post employment ads on our website, wrenchway, Indeed, and Ziprecruiter. The application process takes 2 to 5 minutes.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes, we like to schedule a 5 minute phone interview to review qualifications and discuss the opening.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

We schedule interviews at the convenience of the applicant. We can stay after hours or Saturdays if necessary.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes, we perform background checks and drug screening prior to employment. We do not test for cannibus since it was legalized for medical purposes in 2019.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

1 to 5 days after the interview, we will make an offer.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

5 to 10 days.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

We encourage Spanish speaking candidates to apply. Our Kia advisor is fluent in Spanish. Lebanon County has a large and vibrant Hispanic population, many from Puerto Rico. 14% of Lebanon County residents are Hispanic. Lebanon County is a great place to live, 2 hours from Philadelphia, New York City and Baltimore. We are 20 minutes from Hershey Park. Historic Mount Gretna is in Lebanon County. Lebanon County offers great housing options with a low cost of living compared to major cities, top rated schools, great outdoor activities including boating, hiking and more. The Blue Mountains cut through the northern part of the county with access to the Appalachian Trail. Lebanon County is a great place to live, work and play.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $60,000 - $100,000/year

We offer the highest pay rates in the industry! Compensation is flat-rate and based on experience, skills, and certifications. We are the only shop in the area that pays extra on Warranty work! Supplemental Warranty Pay - $5 extra per hour is paid on all warranty work to recognize our technicians commitment to training and customer satisfaction. We also offer bonus pay at reaching 40, 50 and 60 hours flat rate in a week.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $42,000 - $60,000/year

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $37,000 - $45,000/year

Compensation is flat-rate and may be flexible based on experience, skills, certifications, and efficiency.

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $30,000 - $35,000/year

Compensation is strait time plus bonuses.

Service Advisor
Service Advisors are primarily customer focused and, as one of the faces of the shop, they are critical in keeping customers happy. Service Advisors are frequently focused on taking customer calls, relaying information to technicians, and selling repair jobs. Both technical and sales experience are helpful for this position.
Pay Range: $55,000 - $80,000/year

Compensation is salary plus commission based on team performance and customer satisfaction ratings.

Service Manager
Service Managers are responsible for management and overall health of the shop. Service Managers are typically focused on running an efficient shop that meets their financial goals. Other responsibilities can include staffing, performance evaluations, and financial analysis amongst many other responsibilities.
Pay Range: $0 - $0/year

Salary plus commission

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $12 - $15/hour

Health Insurance Offered
We offer Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance with a $1500 deductible for individuals and $3,000 deductible for families. The cost of insurance is subsidized by Ladd Hanford to keep the costs to employees down. Employee cost is $39,90 per week for individual coverage or $151 per week for family coverage. Coverages start on the 1st of the month following your start date.
Dental Insurance Offered
We offer dental insurance through United Concordia Dental Insurance at an additional cost. The cost of dental insurance for individual coverage is $5.60 per week or $18.75 per week for family coverage.
Vision Insurance Offered
Vision expenses are generally not covered by health insurance except for injury or disease but can be paid for with your health savings account.

Matching 401(k) up to 2%. Eligible after 1 year of employment.

Master Technicians - 10 days plus one day per year of service up to 15 days. B Technicians - Up to 10 days plus one day per year of service up to 15 days. C Technicians and Express Lane Technicians - Up to 5 days in the first year of employment plus one day per year of service up to 15 days.
