Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

We are able to warm the shop up very well. Our bay door faces North so no direct sun enters shop in summer. Easily cooled with fans and swamp cooler.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We are looking to get back to a team of 3-4 techs. Currently have a B+ and a C tech.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Customer hours are 8:00 to 5:30. Tech times are 7:45 to 5:00

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

The shop provides most specialty type tools such as ball joint press, hub tamer, scan tools, etc. There isn't much we don't have.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have a lunch table that we sit for lunch each day.

How many bays does your shop have?

Currently 5 functioning lifts, one lift about to be installed, and a flat space area.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

This year we are currently averaging 127 per month with an ARO of $903.17. We would rather have a higher ARO than a high car count with low ARO.

What is your parts ordering process?

Parts are order by Service Manager/Advisor when a job is sold to customer then delivered to each techs work area accordingly

What is your policy on side work?

No side work in the shop. Techs can work on personal vehicles on slower days, after regular shop hours, or weekends but no 'friends' vehicles.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

John genuine cares about the people that work at John's Auto Care. Having been in every position in a shop he has a good perspective of everyone's roles.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We local in-person training is available through our parts suppliers we take advantage of that. Online training is also available through our parts suppliers. The shop pays for any training courses including ASE certifications.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Our pay scale is one that rewards a person for the work they get done. Self-motivation is key to growth in any business. If someone is new to the industry then growth potential is substantial. A well seasoned person that fits us can have a top tier pay rate from the start.

Can you describe your performance review process?

A 60 day review of individual performance is based on attendance, numbers generated, general attitude, and work ethic. This is presented either by John or Robert.

What type of safety training is required?

One needs to know how to use 'common sense' in most cases but will be trained, if necessary, to properly use lifts and other shop equipment.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Our more seasoned techs are usually open to assisting more 'green' techs when they have questions or need assistance. John works with entry-level techs to help them immediately begin to understand fundamental concepts and processes.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

John has recently become a member of the local Rotary Club of Boulder.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Not at the moment but this is something that is on John's radar once we get a full staff again so he can pursue this type of

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We would like to be at $1.7 million per year by then. Last year was our first year to break a million. We have been consistently growing year over year with the exception of 2 years out of 17.

We are very flexible with how an person gets hired at John's Auto Care

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

I wouldn't say we phone screen. We are open to any work inquiries whether over the phone or a walk-in.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Mostly what you may be observing in this portal.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Typically, No

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We sometimes have a person work with a entry pay of $16 per hour for usually 1 week to assess an applicants actual abilities.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Usually within a couple of days. Sometimes someone is hired on the spot.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Depends on the needs of the individual and of the shop.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $65,520 - $130,000/year

Flat Rate Hour - Based on avg of 30 - 50 billed hours per week at $42 - $50 per flat rate hour. 27-hour base at flat hour rate for 40 hours of clock time.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $54,600 - $109,200/year

Flat Rate Hour - Based on avg of 30 - 50 billed hours per week at $35 - $42 per flat rate hour. 22-hour base pay at flat hour rate for 40 hours of clock time.

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $35,400 - $63,700/year

Flat Rate Hour - Based on avg of 25 - 35 billed hours per week at $27 - $35 per flat rate hour. 15-hour base pay at flat hour rate for 40 hours of clock time.
