Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our large service facility is heated with efficient recycled oil heat and cooled with Big Ass Fans (see pictures) in the summer. Being in the mountains with a wide open area the shop is comfortable on the hottest days of summer

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We do not use the team system for technicians. Each Tech is assigned to an advisor and works primarily with that person

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

We are open from 7:30 to 5:30 on weekdays and have a Saturday schedule that only requires 1 weekend a month. Closed Sunday

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We have all manufacturers special tools. Technicians must supply their own hand tools

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have a large break room , with TV and refrigerator, microwave and sink. we also have outdoor areas for nice days

How many bays does your shop have?

Chevrolet shop has 32 stalls / 26 dedicated to main shop service / 4 Quick service / 2 Alignment machines

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We average about 40 repair orders a day / 800 t0 1000 per month

What is your parts ordering process?

Copies of all repair orders go directly to parts department when started and recognized needed parts are pulled in advance. Technicians have the option of electronic pricing and ordering or using the large parts counter to get estimates and pull parts.

What is your policy on side work?

Technicians can use the facility to work on their own and immediate family members vehicles after hours and on Saturdays.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

All A,B and C techs have 2 lifts and we have 2 heavy duty truck lifts that are left unassigned if needed for larger vehicles

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We offer paid GM and Hyundai web based and hands-on training. We use KPA services for safety training.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We always look to promote from within before hiring. The current Service Manager started here as technician!

Can you describe your performance review process?

We do annual performance reviews with employees. Reviews go both ways, making sure the employees can also evaluate supervisor performance

What type of safety training is required?

We use KPA services for safety training. All aspects are covered, from Lift safety to diversity training

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We try to keep 2 apprentice technicians on staff to work with our experienced technicians and grow. All of our experienced techs are happy to help the younger guys learn to do the job correctly

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Pre-Covid we hosted annual car shows at the dealership that had great turn-outs. We also contribute to local school raffles with prizes, and help out with local food drives.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

our Service manager is on the advisory board at the local tech school for the automotive program. We do job shadowing for the students twice yearly.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We just added a new building for our heavy duty truck repairs. That opened 11 bays for for our automotive / light duty truck shop. We have been steadily growing and expanding and plan to continue that trend for the foreseeable future!

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We use a standard VA state application form that can be filled out in less than 30 minutes

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We usually set up our in person interviews with a phone conversation first.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Technicians meet with the Service Manager and shop foreman to discuss the expectations of our company. We give applicants a tour of the facility and answer any questions they may have. Depending on position there may be more than one interview.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We do require a background check, and we are a drug free company. We do perform random drug tests, and reserve the right to test any employee we feel may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We rely on the applicant to honestly detail their skill levels

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

We usually make a decision within 2 days after the first interview

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

7-10 days depending on background check results

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $70,000 - $100,000/year

Technician pay is commission based with production bonuses that start at hours turned above 40. We also have bonus plans for completion rates on Multipoint inspections and rotating spiffs on recommended services

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $55,000 - $75,000/year

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $40,000 - $60,000/year

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $28,000 - $40,000/year

Technician pay is commission based with production bonuses that start at hours turned above 40. We also have bonus plans for completion rates on Multipoint inspections and rotating spiffs on recommended services

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $12 - $20/hour

Apprentices are paid a base hourly rate and paired with a trained tech. Apprentices receive on the job training and complete manufacturer web-based and hands on training. Apprentices begin earning a commission split in addition to hourly rate when they reach a level that allows them to complete certain repairs confidently without supervision.
