Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shop is heated. During the summer the large garage doors are open creating ventilation.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

It all depends on the location. Anywhere from 5 to 20 people.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We have many tools on site for techs. If there is something we don't have we can get it. Individual computers with Dealer software 1 inch drive sockets Specialty tooling Engine, hydraulic, transmission Battery chargers Tap and Dies Precision measuring tooling Flow meters / troubleshooting gauges Bearing pullers Porta power Transfer pumps Press and press tools Drill Press / Mill Part cleaners

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have a break room in all of our facilities. The break room has refrigerators, microwaves, toasters, ice, sink and table and chairs to sit out.

How many bays does your shop have?

18 Commerce City - Main shop 4 Commerce City - Dahlia shop

How many repair orders do you average per month?

300 to 500

What is your parts ordering process?

The technicians will look parts up on their own computers and send in a request to the parts department for quoting and availability via Email. The service write receives parts quote from Parts department and creates service quote for approval.

What is your policy on side work?

Side work on heavy equipment is a conflict of interest and is not allowed. Automotive side work is allowed.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Yes, as a John Deere dealer we have unlimited resources to Deere training and certification classes. Our techs are required to keep current on their certifications. All certifications are paid for by Honnen/

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We have many level of techs and opportunities. New techs will start out a level I but can quickly move to a level II or III. We also have the opportunity to techs to transition to Field Techs. Along with multiple other opportunities on our Sales or Administrative side.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Annual reviews are performed in January and February. Managers complete the review and then sit down with the employee to discuss and set goals for next year. Annual reviews usually come with a pay increase.

What type of safety training is required?

We have monthly safety training.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Depending on the job. Techs can team up with seasoned techs. They can perform repairs together or be a guide to them on work that has been assigned. Most of the time, the shop foreman will assign work base on the technician’s level of experience and then work with them to complete the job. As experience grows the level of troubleshooting will increase with an overview of the shop foreman.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

As a John Deere retailer we support both agriculture and construction endeavors. One of the biggest local events we support is the National Western Stock Show. We also support the Big Dig Fundraising event in Denver.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We are partnered with multiple schools and attend many High School and Middle School job fairs generate interest in diesel mechanics.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

At Honnen we are constantly trying to exceed the bar we set. We strive to provide exceptional customer service from Sales to Service. We want to continue to be the best at what we do and grow our staff to be the best in the business.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Yes, usually the application process takes about 10-20 minutes.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

This really depends on the applicant. If they are local to the location we try to have them come in so they can see the shop. If they are out of town we can do a phone screening.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

In-person interviews entail meeting with the manager, supervisor, and/or foreman. There are usually questions about mechanic knowledge and behavior based questions. Then a walk around the shop to meet and talk with current techs and to see our space.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes, we perform background checks, drug screenings and if needed for driving purposes at Motor Vehicle Report.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

We try to give candidates offers on the spot, but in some cases a response may take up to 24 hours.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Our goal at Honnen is no longer than 2 weeks from application submission to offer.
