Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The Denton shop is heated. We do have 3 chiller fans that are connected to water tanks to blow cool air in the summer.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

There are currently 11 Mechanics, a Parts Clerk, Service Writer, and 2 Detailers at the Denton shop. Denton is also 1 of 6 locations where we hold Driver Orientation so you will see Orientation staff and Drivers as well.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

The Denton shop is open 7 days a week, and there are 3 different shift timeframes. 1. Front half days: Sunday - Wednesday, 7am-5:30pm. 2. Back half days: Wednesday - Saturday, 7am-5:30pm. 3. Nights: Monday - Friday, 3:30pm-midnight.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Alignment, tire mount and dismount, tire balance machine, tire air impact, two diagnostic laptops, 1-truck, 1-trailer, seal drivers, multi-meter, coolant pressure tester, grease guns, ladders, jump start pack, press, bench vise, jack stands, and air jacks.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Small breakroom containing a microwave, two small refrigerators, and a picnic table for seating.

How many bays does your shop have?

There are 3 drive through bays, and 1 drive thru wash bay.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Denton averages 450-600 repair orders per month.

What is your parts ordering process?

Freightliner stocked parts are ordered from Truck Country Dubuque and shipped to Denton. Navistar parts ordered from local Southwest International dealer. Kenworth parts ordered from local MHC dealer. All parts that are non-stocked are sourced from local dealers.

What is your policy on side work?

Employees may hold outside jobs as long as they meet the performance standards of their job with Hirschbach.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

The Denton shop has its own tire room, and are able to perform flat repairs and replace tires on trucks and trailers. They can also perform rock chip repairs on all windshields and replace windshields on Freightliner trucks only.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We offer hands on training on all of our class 8 equipment from Tractors, Trailers, Refrigerated units, and Auxiliary Power Units. We also have online training courses through Freightliner as well as access to train at a Freightliner Training Center. Our proctors can get people certified to handle refrigerant, operate forklifts, and scissor lifts. We are working closely with our company CDL Training School to help Technicians obtain a CDL if they choose.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We provide a 4 tier comprehensive level plan in our shops that allows a Tech to grow at their own pace. Starting as an Apprentice in our program allows us to grow someone that has never works on any class 8 equipment and help guide them with the assistance of a Trainer and online courses to becoming a well rounded Technician. With added training and mentoring we can help Techs move up through the ranks to becoming one of the Top Fleet Techs in our industry. With our ever expanding company there are many chances for advancement - not only as a Tech, but in other areas as well such as Lead, Foreman, Shop Manager, and Road Assist Advisors.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Performance reviews are distributed to employees 14 days before their anniversary date so that they can provide their feedback to the questions asked. Their Manager will then receive their feedback and provide their own. Once both sides of feedback are provided the employee and Manager will have a sit down meeting to review the year prior and discuss the goals for the coming year.

What type of safety training is required?

Any prior safety training in an industrial setting or former shop is always a positive but not necessary. We have the ability to adequately train our folks with our mentorship and vendors that we have at our disposal to make sure we are staying current with policy and safety changes.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Through our training we will put an inexperienced Technician with one of our veteran Technicians to work side by side to gain over all knowledge and first hand experience. We pride ourselves on the culture that we can provide in the shop with being able to brainstorm with fellow Technicians from all across our company to gain more knowledge. One of Hirschbach's values is to have a fun, can do attitude and knowing employees enjoying their work is essential to the companies success.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Hirschbach's mission statement is that we strengthen our communities by providing safe, reliable, and innovative transportation solutions. We do our best to make sure that we exhaust all opportunities with keeping our business local. We build relationships with local vendors such as metal fabrication shops, hardware supplies, tire vendors and even sourcing food from local distributors for company events. We provide jobs at competitive rates for all our personnel for a better quality of life as well as providing job security in our industry.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We continually form partnerships locally at our various locations with high schools and trade schools/trade programs. We partner with WyoTech and UTI and attend career fairs with their organizations as well. We have alumni on staff from both Tech schools currently!

Where do you see the shop in five years?

In five years we see the shop being more efficient in our training processes, and striving to help out Techs continue to be the best that they can be - whatever that looks like to them! Hirschbach has grown significantly in the last 5 years alone, and there are incredible growth plans for us in the next 5 years!

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

With the overall goal of this company being the largest refrigerated carrier in North America (currently the 2nd largest) right now is the perfect time to start with the Hirschbach team!

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Our application form takes 3-5 minutes if the candidate has an updated resume ready to upload. We can still accept applications without a resume, but will have the candidate complete a formal application at some point in the process.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes - a Recruiter will set up an initial call with you to get a better understanding of your experience and skill set before scheduling an in-person interview with the Shop Manager. The initial call will take 10-15 minutes.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Candidates meet with Jason Damewood, Denton Shop Manager, and run through questions pertaining to the candidate's job history, experience, skill set, and the expectations they have for Hirschbach as an employer. He will then provide a shop tour so that the candidate can see the shop for themselves.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Once an offer of employment is accepted we will perform a pre-employment background check and a drug screen before confirming a start date.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

After an in-person interview Hirschbach reaches out to candidates either way with a response. Candidates will hear back from their Recruiter within a week of the interview.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

The entire hiring process, at most, will take two weeks. We strive to make the experience as fast as possible.

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $15 - $16/hour

Based on experience. $2/hr Shift Differential applied to any Mechanic working 2nd shift.

Level 1 - Trailer Mechanic Pay Range: $20 - $26/hour

Based on experience. $2/hr Shift Differential applied to any Mechanic working 2nd shift.

Level 2 - Trailer Mechanic Pay Range: $22 - $29/hour

Hourly rate based on experience. $2/hr Shift Differential applied to any Mechanic working 2nd shift.

Level 3 - Trailer Mechanic Pay Range: $26 - $36/hour

Hourly rate based on experience. $2/hr Shift Differential applied to any Mechanic working 2nd shift.

Level 1 - Tractor Mechanic Pay Range: $20 - $27/hour

Based on experience. $2/hr Shift Differential applied to any Mechanic working 2nd shift.

Level 2 - Tractor Mechanic Pay Range: $24 - $32/hour

Based on experience. $2/hr Shift Differential applied to any Mechanic working 2nd shift.

Level 3 - Tractor Mechanic Pay Range: $27 - $36/hour

Based on experience. $2/hr Shift Differential applied to any Mechanic working 2nd shift.

Paid Time Off: You will earn one 8 hours of PTO for each month that you work, capping at 88 hours of PTO during your first year of employment. After year one, you will receive 88 hours on your anniversary date. PTO includes vacation and sick leave.

Hirschbach observes 6 holidays each year. The holidays are as follows: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
