Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Yes the shop is heated, but it is not air conditioned. Gatorades are provided in the summertime. Water is available at the drinking stations. Everyone is encouraged to bring a bottle for water.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

The size of the shop is 1 foreman, 8 technicians, 2 apprentice technicians, 3 parts counter persons, 2 advisors, 1 service lane assistant, 2 detailers.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Our shop hours are 7:30am-6:00pm. Our technicians work from 8:00am-5:00pm with the occasional Saturday in the event that we are backed up. Our part counter persons work from 7:30am-6:00pm with the occasional Saturday.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Manufacturer specific tools are provided via manufacturer tool program. Technicians also have the option to buy tools. We provide all the specialty tools imaginable for the bigger jobs

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have an air-conditioned breakroom complete with a full size refridgerators, a microwave, big screen TV and sink.

How many bays does your shop have?

We have 14 tech bays 2 lube tech bays 1 alignment rack 2 dry bays (details), 2 wet bays (wash)

How many repair orders do you average per month?

On average, we have 750-800 repair orders per month.

What is your parts ordering process?

For special ordering part, the Service Ordered Parts are tracked through Parts and upon arrival SOP order forms are given to the Service Manager, dispersed to advisors who are to schedule the guest in the SOP installation. The Advisor then gives the SOP sheets back to the parts for expected ETA for installment. When the vehicle is in the shop, the technician recommends parts and repairs. The order goes through DMS where Parts prices the part. Then goes from DMS to Advisor to gain approval for the job. One the job is approve it is submitted back through Parts for ordering. Parts will let Advisor know ETA on parts. Advisor will determine next steps.

What is your policy on side work?

There is no side work allowed in the shop. However, technicians are free to work on cars on the side outside of work. Technicians can work on their own car, once a repair order has been generated. Discounts on parts are subject to the policy in the handbook (cost plus 20%).

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Our Chevy store in Camby was Greg and Heidi's very first store so it is near and dear to our hearts. It has been a mainstay in the community. Speaking of, Greg Hubler Chevy is the premier sponsor for the Morgan County Fairground Summer Concert and "Drink at the Creek" Winery Summer Concert Series. Finally Greg has partnered with Chevy Baseball and Sofball to provide new equipment and opportunities to earn donations.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Yes! Absolutely. We have specific manufacturer training we follow as well as provide additional ongoing training based on your requests and the service manager's skill gap assessment.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We have position descriptions for every job in the company. We also have, for each department, a career ladder (parts, service, technicians, sales, QuickLane). It specifically outlines what skills/experience you need to get to the next level, what that level will pay, who will be your mentor will be. You can stay in the technician career path or move across career paths to parts, sales or any other area which interests you. We do focus on structure first, but our desire is to have you personally and professionally grow with us. We are looking for individuals who want to make Greg Hubler their work "home;" a place where you can have a long fulfilling career.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We have a performance review process once a year during the month of your hire date. This includes a self assessment component. The review process is meant to be a back and forth dialogue about how you performed in the past year and what goals you want to set with your service manager for the next year. It would entail a career discussion component and a review of our career ladder. In addition to your skills and abilities you would discuss how you are doing relative to our Core Values (Professional Development, Teamwork and Commitment).

What type of safety training is required?

We have an annual 5 course safety training program which is comprised of Hazardous Communications, Lock Out/Tag Out, Bloodborne Pathogens, Emergency Evacuation Action Plan, and Personal Protective Equipment. We have additional position specific safety training as needed. There may be additional safety training specific to the manufacturer which may be required.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We will place an A tech with a B or C tech to provide mentoring. For our lube techs, we will place them with a C tech for mentoring. This mentoring includes shadowing and role-playing.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We sponsor concert series, participate in career fairs, chamber of commerce events, as well as support our local high schools and local colleges. We will have technicians promote various events on behalf of Greg Hubler Automotive. They may answer questions of students at career fairs to throwing T shirts and swag to concert goers from the stage. We have an array of activities our technicians can participate in if they wish to get involved.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We offer an apprentice program wherein we work with high school students who are studying automotive repair. We will offer apprenticeship positions wherein a team member will work part time while finishing school. He or she may participate in our tool program where in we provide a toolbox with a great starter set of tools. If the team member progresses, that toolbox is gifted to them at the end of the apprenticeship program.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We see our technician department in the next 5 years being a state of the art facility that "grows our own" technicians. We will be bringing in individuals who have the drive and desire to be a technician but may not have the skill set yet. That's where we come in!!! We will grow our own techs teaching and mentoring them on everything from effectively communicating issues and solutions to not only other technicians but to guests and advisors as well. We will grow our technicians who have no experience into C, B, and A technicians. We will take them as far as they want to go. Our technicians will be completely happy and fulfilled and will not have any desire to go anywhere else because everything they could need or want is right here at Greg Hubler Automotive.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We do not have an application form. You can find our postings on our individual websites, directly on Indeed and Zip Recruiter or here on the wrench way site. The postings are location specific. We ask for your name and contact information and your resume.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

No, not necessarily. We may from time to time call someone who we may think would be a better fit for another opening we have. In those situations, we would want to make sure that candidate was interested in that other position.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

We typically will have 3 individuals interviews at the most. Some potential interviewers would be a service manager, fixed operations director, a parts manager or general sales manager or advisor. The hiring manager would select with whom you would interview. We use a behavioral based interviewing process called the STAR interview process. Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Currently we perform the following: a 4-panel drug screen (opiates, amphetamines, PCP, and cocaine), an MVR check, a social security number trace, a nationwide criminal database search, and a sex offender check.

No.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

You should expect an offer letter to be made within 24 hours.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

We review candidates who apply for our jobs daily. We know you have many companies to choose from. We want the time frame to be no more than 1 week from the time you apply for the job to the time we make a hiring decision.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $65,000 - $90,000/year ($31.25 - $43.27/hr)

We offer top level flat rate hourly compensation for "A" level technician as well as monthly productivity bonuses and annual retention bonuses. Standard pay is paid weekly.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $55,000 - $65,000/year ($26.44 - $31.25/hr)

We offer top level flat rate hourly compensation for "B" level technician as well as monthly productivity bonuses and annual retention bonuses. Standard pay is paid weekly.

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $40,000 - $55,000/year ($19.23 - $26.44/hr)

We offer top level flat rate hourly compensation for "C" level technician as well as monthly productivity bonuses and annual retention bonuses. We also offer apprenticeship programs. Standard pay is paid weekly.

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $28,000 - $38,000/year ($13.46 - $18.27/hr)

We offer top level hourly compensation for Lube Technicians as well as monthly spiff bonuses. We offer manufacturer training as well as apprenticeship programs. Standard pay is paid weekly.

Service Advisor
Service Advisors are primarily customer focused and, as one of the faces of the shop, they are critical in keeping customers happy. Service Advisors are frequently focused on taking customer calls, relaying information to technicians, and selling repair jobs. Both technical and sales experience are helpful for this position.
Pay Range: $45,000 - $100,000/year

We offer top level competitive pay plans that are salary based ( no draws ) with commission paid out as a percent of individual sales, total shop sales, and CSI. Salary is paid weekly, bonuses are paid out on or before the 15th of the following month.

Service Manager
Service Managers are responsible for management and overall health of the shop. Service Managers are typically focused on running an efficient shop that meets their financial goals. Other responsibilities can include staffing, performance evaluations, and financial analysis amongst many other responsibilities.
Pay Range: $60,000 - $120,000/year

We offer a top level pay plan for our service managers that consists of salary weekly, monthly bonuses paid out as a percent of service gross, parts gross and CSI. Salary is paid weekly.

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $15 - $16/hour

We offer top level hourly compensation for Tech Apprentice. We offer manufacturer training as well as apprenticeship programs that include tool packages. Standard pay is paid weekly.
