Freestate Auto and Truck Service is a full-service automotive repair facility specializing in fleet maintenance and repair for light and medium duty, gasoline and diesel vehicles, as well as everyday automotive maintenance. We have provided the Washington Metropolitan area with the latest products and unprecedented service since 1989. Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Not at this time, until expansion in the fall of 2022.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

A team of approximately 10-15, including owner, shop foreman, master technician, office personnel, service advisors, and technicians. However, our team is constantly growing with plans to expand the shop in the fall of 2022.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

8am-5:30pm Monday-Friday for technicians and office personnel/service advisors.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Diagnostic equipment and specialty tools.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Lunch room with 2 microwaves and 2 refrigerator/freezers, water cooler available for staff.

How many bays does your shop have?

11 bays total which include 8 lifts and 1 alignment machine/lift. The number of available bays and lifts will increase in the fall of 2022 with expansion to the adjacent shop.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

275-300 and increasing each month.

What is your parts ordering process?

After receiving the repair order with recommended repairs and part descriptions, service advisor creates the estimate and get approval from customer or fleet company, then orders the parts needed from various suppliers and are typically received within 1 hour to a few days, based on availability, location, and whether parts are on backorder.

What is your policy on side work?

After hours or during lunch break with approval when using the shop, tools, and lifts for personal vehicles only. Side work for customer's vehicles is prohibited.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Relaxed and fun team environment but focused on achieving goals and improvement. Rewards system and bonuses based on accomplishments. Company events and outings throughout the year, ie. fishing trips, dinners, etc.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Training paid for by Freestate Auto & Truck for completed courses, including Maryland State Inspection course.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Maryland State Inspection and ASE Course Reimbursement with completion of courses.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Daily and weekly communications with regard to flat rate hours and goal setting.

What type of safety training is required?

none at this time.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Master technicians instruct and mentor younger technicians on an individual basis. Explain and show proper procedures for diagnostics and repairs.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Freestate donates to various schools, churches, and community projects throughout the year.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

The school system in our area is not set up to partner with local shops and the recent pandemic has greatly impacted alliances with local schools.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

Freestate is growing and improving at a consistent rate by investing in current personnel and expanding the physical location. Our goal is to be the largest and most reputable shop in the D.C. Metropolitan area.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Yes, application takes approximately 10-20 minutes to complete.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes, applicants are screened in a general sense prior to an in-person interview.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Discussing general information such as whether the applicant is currently employed, level of technician, prior work experience, and availability to interview if interested.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Not at this time.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

A general skill assessment/ verbal knowledge test while interviewing with the shop foreman and Master Technician.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Approximately 1 week.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $62,000 - $100,000/year ($29.81 - $48.08/hr)

Master Level Tech guaranteed $40+ per hour starts with a guarantee minimum and is capable of completing almost any vehicle repair. Maryland State Inspection certified and ASE or dealer training a plus!

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $46,800 - $62,400/year ($22.50 - $30.00/hr)

B Level technician is guaranteed $30.00 per hour minimum salary and experienced in vehicle repair basics, still needs more training and experience to achieve A level.

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $31,200 - $52,000/year ($15.00 - $25.00/hr)

C level technician is guaranteed $15.00-$25.00 per hour guaranteed minimum salary and can perform PM services, brake repairs, minor electrical, exhaust, and suspension repairs. C level technician is fairly new the automotive industry and needs more hands-on training and experience to achieve B level status. Must be ambitious and committed to improving.

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $0 - $0/year


Service Advisor
Service Advisors are primarily customer focused and, as one of the faces of the shop, they are critical in keeping customers happy. Service Advisors are frequently focused on taking customer calls, relaying information to technicians, and selling repair jobs. Both technical and sales experience are helpful for this position.
Pay Range: $0 - $0/year


Service Manager
Service Managers are responsible for management and overall health of the shop. Service Managers are typically focused on running an efficient shop that meets their financial goals. Other responsibilities can include staffing, performance evaluations, and financial analysis amongst many other responsibilities.

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $0 - $0/hour


Collision Technician - A Level Pay Range: $0 - $0/year


Collision Technician - B Level Pay Range: $0 - $0/year


Collision Painter Pay Range: $0 - $0/year


Collision Prepper Pay Range: $0 - $0/year
