Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our shop is fully heated and air conditioned with high speed doors to keep it the inside in and the outside out.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

The team consists of the Shop Foreman, Central Diagnostic Tech (CDT), 16 main shop technicians, two apprentices, and nine express techs.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

We are open 7am-6pm Monday-Friday (NO SATURDAYS). Shifts are 8.5 hours, including a half-hour lunch break

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We have one Xentry machine for every two stalls, a tire area with three Hunter tire machines and balancers, and an extensive special tool and equipment inventory. We also utilize the latest enterprise-grade wireless networking equipment to ensure the best performance possible!

What type of break room facility is provided?

There is a break room just off the shop with vending machines, a free coffee machine, filtered drinking water, and a refrigerator.

How many bays does your shop have?

24 main shop hoists, 3 flat stalls, 4 express stalls, 1 alignment rack

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We average a little over 1,800 RO's per month

What is your parts ordering process?

We use a simple parts request form in Microsoft Teams - just enter your RO #, and what you need, then parts brings all of your parts out to your stall.

What is your policy on side work?

All vehicles in the shop for work must have an RO open. If we are not charging labor on the RO, the work must be done before/after your shift. We also have a hard stop shortly after 6pm to secure the building and close the gate.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Ask about our service numbers and we’re happy to show them to you! And no… we’re not going to show you our service log of our best week ever. We’ll gladly show you the big picture! Our shop is cleaned nightly! It also includes bright lights to provide our technicians with the best working environment possible! Compare our pay plan to any others and let us know if you are able to find one better! We'd be interested in learning if we can improve ours!

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

For experienced techs - your first one-two months will be spent with the CDT tech and Shop Foreman to help you get comfortable, understand the process, and be ready to hit the ground running. We are aggressive in grabbing every training seat available at the MB training centers. In addition to paying training at your production average, we also provide a $100 tool credit for every in-person training class you attend, as and added incentive for learning, growing, and making the investment in yourself.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We have a well laid out express technician training program, with levels 1-5. The steps to move from level to level are clearly defined in writing. Levels 1-4 are in express, and level 5, the last stop before moving into the main shop, is training with our CDT technician. For experienced techs, we offer room to grow, potentially into foreman/CDT role.

Can you describe your performance review process?

One-on-ones are performed every six months, and performance will be discussed. The goal of the discussion is to identify training opportunities, as well as what resources and help are needed.

What type of safety training is required?

We have an annual online safety training that is required. There are eight training modules to complete each year.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Part of the express training program above is express techs spending a week at a time with a main shop tech. They will be in the shop shortly after they start, again while they're working in express, and part of level 5 is spending 1-2 months working with a main shop technician.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Feldmann Imports partners with the Angel Foundation, the Federated Challenge, MN Adult & Teen Challenge, Union Gospel Mission, and the United Heroes League.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We work closely with area tech schools, especially Dakota County Technical College, to support career placement after school is completed. We have also hosted Minnetonka High School and their Momentum program in order to give their students a firs-hand look at the work life in the dealership.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We will give you a call to discuss the position and what you're looking for. During that call, we will also set up an in-person interview.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

We use the in-person interview as an opportunity to get to know you better, understand your experience, and what you're looking for from your next career move. We go over pay and all the benefits we offer, and we give you a full tour of the facility.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes, all applicants are asked to complete an AVA assessment, which helps us get to know you better and understand what makes you successful at work. Additionally, all job offers are contingent upon passing a background check, drug screening, and insurability.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

Our Shop Foreman will be part of the interview, and may ask some technical questions to better understand your experience level.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

We will reach out and follow up within 48 hours.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Depending on your availability for the in-person interview, a hiring decision can be made within a week.

Express Technician Pay Range: $18.00 - $23.00/hour

Based on the Express Technician Training Path: New Hire - $18/hour Level 1 - $19/hour Level 2 - $20/hour Level 3 - $21/hour Level 4 - $22/hour Level 5 - $23/hour

A Level Technician Pay Range: $40.00 - $50.00/hour

Main shop technician pay plan is as follows: Guarantee - $40 per hour X 40 hours 100%-112.49% efficiency - $41 per hour produced 112.5%-125% efficiency - $42 per hour produced 125%-137.49% efficiency - $43 per hour produced 137.5%-146.99% efficiency - $44 per hour produced 147% - 154.99% efficiency - $45 per hour produced 155+ % efficiency - $50 per hour produced Paid weekly - on Fridays All vacation, holiday, and training hours are paid at your YTD production average rate on the scale above We chose to create our production scale based on efficiency, rather than total hours for the week, because it provides better flexibility for you to plan your life outside of work. For example, you can take three days off, work 16 hours in two days, flag 24 hours, and you still reach the $45/hr bracket. Other pay scales that are based on total hours for the week would leave that example at a base rate for only producing 40 hours for the week.

Student Tech / Apprentice Pay Range: $18.00 - $23.00/hour

Based on the Express Technician Training Path: New Hire - $18/hour Level 1 - $19/hour Level 2 - $20/hour Level 3 - $21/hour Level 4 - $22/hour Level 5 - $23/hour
